We are seeking a motivated Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprentice to join our mobile maintenance team. This role provides hands-on training in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy mobile equipment used in mining and industrial operations. The apprentice will work alongside experienced technicians, gaining valuable skills in hydraulics, electrical systems, and mechanical repairs while ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities

Area 1:

Equipment maintenance and repairs

  • Assist in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment, including haul trucks, loaders, dozers, graders, and drills.
  • Support scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, including component replacements and system diagnostics. 
  • Learn to inspect and assess mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems for wear, damage, and malfunctions.

Area 2:

 Diagnostics and troubleshooting

  • Learn to use computerized diagnostic tools and equipment to identify system faults.
  • Assist in testing and adjusting machine components to optimize performance.
  • Support the team in identifying and implementing solutions to reduce equipment downtime.

Area 3:

Safety and compliance.

  • Follow all site safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and hazard identification.
  • Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities align with safety regulations and environmental guidelines.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training sessions to enhance hazard awareness and best practices.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and ensure proper handling and storage of tools and equipment.

Area 4:

Learning & development.

  • Participate in structured on-the-job training and technical coursework required for apprenticeship completion.
  • Actively participate in mentorship and training opportunities provided by senior HDET’s.
  • Stay up to date with industry best practices and new technologies.

 

Qualifications
 

Minimum Requirements and Nice To Haves

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, FORMAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS OR EQUIVALENTS

  • Enrolled in or eligible for a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprenticeship Program.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; trade school or college courses in Heavy Equipment Mechanics are an asset.

WORK EXPERIENCE - NATURE & LENGTH

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest working with heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work safely in a physically demanding environment (lifting, climbing, working in confined spaces).
  • Basic knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical systems is preferred.
  • Strong commitment to safety and teamwork.

  • Attention to Detail – Ensuring all work is performed accurately and meets safety and quality standards.
  • Teamwork & Collaboration – Ability to work effectively with millwrights, engineers, and other trades.
  • Communication Skills – Clear verbal and written communication for reporting issues, understanding instructions, and documenting maintenance work.

  • Work Ethic & Reliability – Strong sense of responsibility, punctuality, and commitment to completing tasks efficiently.
  • Problem-Solving Skills – Ability to think critically and assist in troubleshooting and repairs under supervision.
