Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey’s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The In Mine Exploration Department provides technical expertise within the Vale North Atlantic Operations in executing exploration activities in the in-mine/near mine environment to support resource inventory management and the Life of Mine.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Geologist to join our Exploration department in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This is a permanent position.

This position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a two week on, two week off rotation. 

As an Exploration Geologist, you will have the opportunity to further your development by providing day-to-day support for various projects and initiatives within the In-Mine Department. From providing labour and technical support for ongoing In-Mine Exploration programs at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site to leadership development, diversity & inclusion and culture, you will have a holistic and enriching experience like no other. You will also gain a deeper understanding of our company and our sustainable approach to mining via exposure to other Vale operations in Canada and our global headquarters in Brazil. In this position, you will:

• Follow departmental safety program ensuring health, safety and environment are protected.
• Provide geological services to support the execution of In-Mine Exploration activities.  These duties include but are not limited to:
• Technical support and consultation with senior geological staff
• Program supervisor and mentoring of junior geological staff.
• Geological interpretation, target generation, and drill program planning
• Diamond drill core logging and sample collection,
• Field geological and structural mapping.
• Geological section generation,
• Monitoring and maintain accurate drill hole trajectory.
• QA/QC and data set validation of diamond drilling, drill logs and sample assays.
• Field Inspections including pre-setup, drill, post setup.
• Program coordination and logistical support.
• Data management.
• Liaison and provide support to Mine Technical Services teams.
• Other duties as required at discretion of Chief Mine Geologist / Area Geologist

About You

Education:

• An undergraduate degree in a Bachelor of Science (Geology or Earth Sciences).
• B. Sc (Honours) is preferred.
• Registered as a Professional Geologist (P. Geo) in Newfoundland & Labrador

Experience:

• Minimum 4 years of geology related experience as a Geologist in a mining or Exploration environment.

Skills:

• Ability to analyze problems systematically and develop solutions.
• Ability to work and supervise contractors daily including development of working relationships with external personnel.
• Concerned with accuracy and thoroughness in data acquisition and interpretation.
• Commitment to continuous learning to improve professional skills, knowledge, and abilities.
• Adherence to QAQC protocols;
• Strong communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
• Knowledge of geological guidelines and standards.
• Knowledge of Mining, Milling and Refining Processes.
• Willingness to learn, comply with and apply Vale SH&E policies and procedures.
• Ability to work individually or as part of a team.
• Knowledge of diamond drilling methods.
• Experience with borehole trajectory tools (Reflex Sprint IQ gyro and TN-14 rig aligner) is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated competency in mining/CAD software including Datamine Studio RM, Fusion (geological data management), Deswik, ArcGIS Pro, and MS Office 360.
• Experience working in an underground mining environment considered an asset
• Experience in a remote work site is considered an asset.
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
