Who We're Looking For:
We're searching for a Formulation Scientist to join the Wud Innovations Lab in Etobicoke, reporting directly to the Director of Innovations. The ideal candidate will have formulation and product development experience in personal or homecare. This role is tailor-made for individuals who thrive in ambiguity, love a technical challenge, and can naturally pivot and do what it takes to achieve goals.
What You'll be Doing Day to Day:
Product development:
- Lead development of personal care and homecare product formulations from concept to launch, in alignment with the company's vision under the guidance of innovation leadership.
- Drive prototype development by identifying optimal methods, tools, and techniques based on project evolution.
- Collaborate with raw material suppliers and technology experts for strategic innovation.
- Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs), experimental designs, and testing methods to evaluate formulation performance, efficacy, and safety.
- Work closely with leadership to refine formulations to meet sensory and functional expectations.
- Engage in day-to-day lab activities to support product development.
Research:
- Develop formulations for homecare and personal care based on latest research in the field and new technologies being offered in the cosmetic/ HI&I raw material manufacturing industry
- Conduct literature research and patent reviews for new product and technology development.
- Perform testing and analysis on end product for stability, performance and sensory properties
- Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis to enhance formulation iterations.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and internal standards for environmental and social impact, as well as sustainability.
- Participate in educational workshops, online sessions, and supplier meetings to stay updated on new technology, lab, and production equipment, as well as new ingredients.
Communications:
- Interface with partners to ensure alignment and progress in product development efforts (e.g., academic institutions, labs, manufacturers, consultants).
- Support with vendor communications and maintaining supplier relationships.
- Effectively communicate project updates and developments to stakeholders through various mediums tailored to their preferences (visual presentations, written reports, verbal calls, group activities, or concise texts).
- Gather and process feedback quantitatively from test participants to support product evolution.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports and documentation required for regulatory compliance, sales, marketing, etc.
What You'll Bring to the Role:
- Minimum 3+ years of experience working in cosmetic or homecare formulations (research or product development).
- Minimum Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, or related scientific field.
- Research skills, exceptional Google-Fu, and ability to quickly learn new topics.
- Verbal and written skills in communicating technical information.
- Past experience in commissioning a chemistry wet lab, calibrating, and installing equipment.
- Experience with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), as well as Regulatory and QC, is an asset but not necessary.
- Experience with upgrading manufacturing or lab environments to meet Green Chemistry Principles is an asset
- Ability to stay organized when working on multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Past experience working at an early stage startup is an asset.
- Possess proactive, problem solving skills; we are seeking someone who can navigate different challenges, think critically and develop effective, forward thinking solutions in a dynamic environment
- A deep connection with nature; interested in hiking and exploring global natural environments to bring perceptive insights to aid in product development ,

Salary Range: CAD $75,000-$85,000
