Professor, Media Studies

Vancouver Island University
Entry Level, Early Career
Professor, Media Studies

The Media Studies Department at Vancouver Island University offers a unique balance of theory and praxis through its close association of critical theory and applied knowledge. These two approaches within the program are mutually supportive: applied projects reflect greater engagement with issues and have more substance when informed by the thoughtful application of theory; and theoretical reflection is tempered, balanced, and deepened by the demands of technical production involving its own types of problem-solving.

We invite applications for a regular half-time position with a focus on digital literacies, social media, visual culture, critical media analysis, advertising and marketing, and introductory media production skills. Undergraduate teaching will be your main priority in this role.

Duties:

This position involves teaching critical media analysis and digital media making to small classes of engaged undergraduate students in a mix of studio and classroom delivery.

The successful candidate will need to be available for in-person teaching at VIU's Nanaimo Campus.

Short-listed candidates will be asked to teach a (15 minute) short segment in your introductory class for MEDI 211: Understanding Television as a part of the interview to assess your teaching style, how you might organize a course, develop diverse curricula, make evident your thoughts on modes of assessment, and how you imagine engaging and inspiring students.

Please ensure your cover letter focuses on teaching, and that you highlight your technical media making skills and experience as well as your theoretical foundations. Please ensure your CV includes your technical competencies.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

A PhD (completed, ABD, or in-progress) in a related field from an appropriately accredited institution, plus a strong record of teaching or clear promise of excellence for working in a teaching-focused undergraduate program is required.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate the ability to teach BOTH media making AND critical media analysis with a focus on six areas noted in the first paragraph.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working as a digital media professional will be considered a plus.

VIU is pleased to offer employees a comprehensive benefit plan; ample paid holiday time; professional development opportunities and a desirable pension plan that takes the worry out of retirement. As part of the VIU campus community, our employees work with supportive colleagues within an encouraging environment and are provided with the tools and training that promote learning and development. The perks of VIU employment are multiple, and include well-being initiatives and services, strategic discounts, and flexible work opportunities.

Note:

Short-listed candidates must provide original transcripts, or applicable original certifications at time of interview.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
Vancouver Island University (VIU) is collectively committed to building and sustaining a diverse and inclusive working and learning environment for faculty, staff, and students. In our journey towards greater diversity, we invite applications from members of equity-seeking communities including women, racialized and Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, persons of all gender identities and sexual orientations who bring value to the VIU community through their lived experiences. We encourage members of all equity-seeking groups to self-identify within their application cover letter. When a candidate voluntarily discloses this information in their cover letter, the information will be used only for the fulfillment of the career opportunity. Disclosure and/or self-identification with an equity-seeking group will not lead to advantageous treatment of a candidate who is not qualified.
