Environmental Engineer - Sustainability Specialist
GFL is looking for an Environmental Engineer – Sustainability Specialist to join our team at the Vaughan Corporate Office! The Environmental Engineer will be responsible for portions of the Sustainability Team efforts related to sustainability reporting and ESG disclosures, integration of sustainability targets into operations through innovation programs, as well as supporting capital planning and deployment. In this role, the Environmental Engineer – Sustainability Specialist will also support the broader objectives of the Corporate Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability team.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide technical and engineering support for the integration of sustainable value initiatives within operations including:
monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) for comparison to targets;
technical and economic feasibility assessments;
planning, implementing, and documenting continuous improvement efforts affecting KPIs; as well as
supporting the development of business cases for new projects and practices;
Support LFG fugitive emissions inventory management including corporate-level modeling and monitoring as it relates to achieving our GHG targets and objectives;
Provide technical support for operations personnel in areas of LFG modeling, monitoring, and climate science;
Support data collection and reporting of landfill emissions in partnership with operations;
Provide technical expertise in the evaluation of new tools to model and monitor fugitive emissions including:
evaluating and refining industry-standard emissions estimating approaches;
fixed and mobile ground-based sensors; and
aerial sensors including drone, aviation, and satellite;
Engaging and managing external consultants and internal subject matter experts to provide technical support for operations related to sustainable value initiatives;
Support the development of capital estimates and other financial metrics to support decisions regarding sustainable value initiatives;
Support the development of capital estimates for annual budget processes and development of new facilities/projects/proposals;
Support post-acquisition integration relating to environmental matters including the development and implementation of risk management strategies;
Support disclosures and communications relating to sustainable operations to stakeholders including investors, and sustainability rating agencies;
Stay up to date with regulatory and policy changes that will affect sustainability targets, and implementation of sustainable value initiatives;
Support strategic initiatives which may include:
Climate Change Strategy
Sustainability Value Initiatives
Environmental Innovation Programs
Climate change risk assessment
Sustainability reporting
Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:
Post-Secondary education in environmental engineering or a related field;
5+ years (greater experience is an asset) of related experience working in a related field;
Critical thinking skills – to support decision-making by translating environmental and engineering data to information;
Data collection, processing, and management with a high level of attention to detail;
Excellent communication skills – Ability to communicate complicated concepts simply and concisely to audiences with varying technical backgrounds (e.g. operations, sustainability, engineering, finance, leadership);
Strong influencing skills – elicit cooperation and build consensus from others in the implementation of sustainable value initiatives, and risk management plans;
Knowledge and experience of industry-wide environmental policies, practices, and regulatory frameworks;
Field experience with environmental monitoring and environmental compliance; and
Experience related to the solid waste and wastewater sectors is considered an asset.
