The Lead Rental Technician (LRT) is a skilled technician, adept at performing a full range of equipment repairs on light construction equipment (skid steers, chippers, trenchers, mini-excavators, etc.) at assigned Home Depot stores or customer job sites. Using company assigned vehicle, the LRT visits store locations or customer job sites to perform repairs and preventive maintenance. Aligning with the Regional Field Operations Manager (RFOM) and Regional Rental Manager (RRM), set daily priorities for Mobile Service Technicians (MST) within assigned area.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
Repairs 50%
- Responsible for maintaining a fleet of rental equipment at store locations, company shop locations and customer job sites.
- Diagnose, maintain, and repair all components of the machine, including gas and diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, fuel systems, and brake systems.
- Reviews Down Equipment Report and communicates with leader to prioritize repairs and service calls.
- Obtains parts needed for repairs, while maintaining timely and accurate parts inventory.
- Utilizes company technology platform to document all work performed on equipment, including labor and parts.
- Assists with equipment deliveries and pick-ups as required.
- Lay out workflow process prioritizing key action items to improve efficiency.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Regional Rental Manager (RRM), Branch Manager, Field Operations Rental Manager, or authorized personnel.
Compliance: Safety & Dept of Transportation 40%
- Deploys new equipment to store locations, including performing PDIs, delivering to the store, and training store associates on safe operation of the equipment
- Operate and maintain a safe environment
- Maintain Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) certifications and other safety related inspections.
- Remains current on local licensing, assigned training, Electronic Logging Device (ELD) and safety requirements.
- Maintains accurate fleet inventory and transfers equipment between locations.
Communication 10%
- Provide training and/or demonstrate correct and safe operation of equipment to customers and associates.
- Support rental centres by explaining the large equipment program and addressing any store-specific issues.
- Provide support throughout the rental period for customers and rental associates, which may include providing best-in-class delivery.
- Uses active listening in understanding message content and point of view in order to fully understand the mechanical problems being reported.
- Communicates clearly with teammates including store associates, technicians, and customers in both verbal and written communications.
- Oversee, set daily priorities, provide support and guidance for associates within assigned area.
Physical Job Requirements & Working Conditions
- Working conditions include significant physical demands such as lifting from the waist, lifting from the shoulder, prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, crawling underneath equipment, climbing on top of equipment, reaching and stretching. Environment will require repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements. Occasionally, employee will be required to work at heights.
- Working conditions include working outdoors, including in extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Working around dirt, grease, fumes, oils, and chemicals; prolonged exposure to loud noises from engines, compressors, power tools, and equipment.
- May require overnight travel about 15% of the time
Minimum Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License for the province you reside in and good driving record.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Ability to diagnose and complete advanced mechanical repairs, including engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
- Ability to read and understand technical repair and parts manuals for equipment, including mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and other components.
- Experience and ability to provide superior customer service
- Ability to work effectively with different personality types and all levels of associates.
- Must be legally permitted to work in Canada
- Working knowledge of handheld technology (smartphone, laptop, tablet, applications).
- Working knowledge and understanding of Motor Carrier Safety regulations/Ministry guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in equipment rental industry, auto/truck mechanic, oil and gas mechanical, light industrial equipment, mechanical/technical aptitude.
- Working understanding of safe load securement, tie downs, and transport.
- Ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, including weather and traffic.
- Previous Leadership or teambuilding experience
- Ability to work independently
- The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a High School Diploma, GED, Technical or Trade School - or equivalent experience in a field of study related to the job.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, troubleshoot and draw valid conclusions.
- Basic knowledge of compact construction equipment, including trenching and earthmoving machinery.
