Cook (Naval Reserve)
*Opportunity*
Is food your passion? Do you love cooking for a crowd? Then consider starting a rewarding and impactful career as a Cook in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF)! Whether working here at home, abroad, or at sea, Cooks prepare the food that fuels the members of the CAF throughout their day.
As a Cook, you’ll also be responsible for adhering to strict standards of nutrition, cleanliness, and food handling to make sure everyone has the sustenance they need to do their jobs.
*Serve with the Naval Reserve*
This position is available for part-time employment with the Naval Reserve at certain locations across Canada. Reserve Force members usually serve part-time at a Reserve Force Unit in their community and may serve while going to school or working at a civilian job. While Reserve Force members usually work on scheduled evenings and weekends, they may also serve in full-time positions at some units for fixed terms, depending on available opportunities.
Naval Reservists are paid during their training. Applying for courses, training and employment outside of their Reserve Division is based on availability. We work around school schedules and employment. On-the-job training is usually conducted at the Reservist’s home unit, or at a unit in Halifax, NS, Victoria, BC, or Quebec City, QC. Reservists may also volunteer for deployment on a military mission within or outside Canada.
The Royal Canadian Naval Reserve offers many benefits, like a competitive pension plan, dental insurance, and reimbursement for college or university courses during your career.
*Overview*

Responsibilities include:
* Prepare and serve meals ranging from cafeteria-style menus to formal multi-course meals for military and civilian dignitaries
* Assist in the handling and control of food and non-food supplies
* Practice workplace health and safety procedures
* Provide for religious and spiritual dietary accommodations
* Manage food safety and defence
* Operate, clean and maintain food services equipment and facilities
*Work Environment*
Naval Reserve Cooks serve with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). They are employed on a part-time or casual full-time basis and usually serve at their home Naval Reserve Unit, a military base, or ship located within Canada.
*Required Education*
The minimum required education to apply for this position is the completion of the provincial requirements for Grade 10 or Secondaire IV in Quebec, including Grade 10 general (workplace) math or math 414/CTS 4 in Quebec. Foreign education may be accepted.
*Basic Military Qualification*
Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) is the first step in a new CAF member’s career. BMQ training provides basic core skills and common knowledge for all CAF trades. A goal of this course is to ensure that all recruits maintain CAF physical fitness standard; as a result, the training is physically demanding. Naval Reservists’ BMQ is designed to be flexible; the course is conducted in three phases. The first and second phases are conducted part-time with the local unit throughout the year. The third phase is conducted in Valcartier (QC) during the summer for three weeks.
*Basic Occupational Qualification Cook Training*
Following basic military training, basic occupational skills training for Cooks is conducted at the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Centre (CFLTC) in Borden, Ontario. Following this, recruits will gain practical experience through an on-the-job training program.
Based on a combination of theory, demonstration and practical hands-on experience, Cooks will learn the following basic skills:
* Cooking terminology, weights and measures
* Conversions and equivalencies
* Introductory baking and meat preparation
* Small and large quantity cooking of a full range of products
* Food safety practices and techniques
* Food service standards and basic food cost controls
