Senior Climate Program Manager - 1 Year Parental Leave Contract - Environmental Defence
About the Role
Environmental Defence Canada (EDC) is a leading Canadian environmental advocacy organization that works with government, industry and individuals to defend clean water, a safe climate and healthy communities. You will be joining a mission-oriented organization with solution-oriented team members who strive to improve our communities and environment. This is a full-time position with an excellent benefits package, 4 weeks vacation, employee and family assistance plan, half-day Fridays between Canada Day and Labour Day and an RRSP matching program. Salary range is $80,000-95,000 depending on experience. This role will be reporting to the Campaigns Director.
Purpose of the Role
Environmental Defence seeks a highly-committed and experienced Senior Program Manager with knowledge of climate and energy policy. The Senior Program Manager will be a key figure in leading Environmental Defence’s efforts to secure effective climate change solutions nationally, oppose environmentally destructive projects and policies, erode the power of the oil and gas sector to undermine climate policy and increase the salience of climate issues in Canada’s national political discourse. In this role, you’ll be coordinating campaigns that build awareness about climate change and its solutions and mobilizing Canadians to demand stronger policies and programs to fight climate change from the federal government. You will be working with other members of the Environmental Defence climate team. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience with climate and energy policy, campaign strategy development, managing teams and project management. Experience in government relations, policy development and communications would be an asset.
Duties and Responsibilities

Monitor federal policy developments related to climate and energy transition issues

Contribute to the overall strategic direction of EDC’s climate programming, and engagement in the national political discourse.

Contribute to the development of campaign and organizational strategy development

Directly oversee and manage a small number of staff

Represent Environmental Defence in coalitions with other climate organizations

Develop relationships with civil servants, elected officials, and political staffers relevant to the climate file at the federal level

Act as a media spokesperson across multiple media platforms

Participate in briefings, committee hearings, and other fora where federal climate policy is being debated

Produce relevant communications-ready information that can be used for blogs, video, website text, press releases, op-eds, newsletters, social media content, reports

Assist with writing grant applications and funder reports
Skills and Experience

5+ years’ experience working on environmental issues or public policy with government or an NGO, with demonstrated success leading issues-based campaigns

Demonstrated experience managing small, high-performing teams

Deep understanding of climate and energy issues

Strong political awareness and strategic insight

Excellent oral and written communication; media spokesperson skills an asset

Strong analytical and research skills

Experience with government relations, coalition building, media and/or politics a plus
Location
This role will be a hybrid role, part time in the office and part time work from home. Toronto or Ottawa preferred.
