Rideau Hall Program Assistant - United for Literacy
Rideau Hall Program Assistant Position
Term: Seasonal Part Time - 7 weeks
Hours: 31 hours weekly
Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Start date: Monday, June 28, 2024
Languages: English and French
THIS POSITION IS FUNDED BY THE ONTARIO SUMMER EXPERIENCE PROGRAM AND SO YOU MUST:
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution or within six months of graduation.
- Be a resident of Ontario
- Be eligible to work in Canada and have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Receive training from United for Literacy staff members on the history and importance of the Rideau Hall Story Time program.
- Conduct outreach to community organizations in the Ottawa/Gatineau area, with a focus on low-income neighbourhoods.
- Help to recruit, screen, train, and manage volunteers to support the Rideau Hall and other Ottawa programs.
- Review past reports to determine the strengths and areas to improve of the program.
- Help to design and deliver an engaging program that includes age appropriate learning activities to build literacy and numeracy skills.
- Ensure the program reflects the initiatives of the Governor General by including relevant activities and using Canadian children's literature.
- Continue to promote the program throughout the summer in a variety of ways.
- Other duties as assigned to support United for Literacy activities in Ottawa.
- Bilingualism (French/English) required.
- Candidate must be able to work weekends.
- Skills in the delivery of children’s learning activities for children from ages 1 to 12.
- Good public relations skills with children, parents, volunteers, and officials.
- Knowledge of literacy, love of reading and writing.
- Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills.
- Skills in supervising and motivating volunteers.
- Ability to work as part of a team and without close supervision.
- Able to think critically and solve problems.
- Access to a vehicle
The Rideau Hall Program Assistant will help to deliver a Storytime literacy program that will include reading, writing, math, and science activities. The program will take place at the Governor General’s residence, Rideau Hall, and will represent United for Literacy to visitors of Rideau Hall. The Program Assistant is a member of the Ottawa regional team and works both independently and collaboratively to carry out the work of United for Literacy. This position reports to the Ottawa Community Coordinator.
Looking for a great opportunity? In this position, you will work with both the oldest literacy organization in Canada, and the residence of the head of state in Canada. In this role, you will help deliver a program for families who visit Rideau Hall, and provide support to United for Literacy programs in Ottawa.
