Context

The Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health is an award-winning Health Access Centre that provides holistic health services to First Nation, Inuit, and Métis people living in Ottawa. Our clinic team provides a holistic model of care for Indigenous peoples and seeks a positive and experienced registered nurse to support day-to-day guidance for our diabetes education team in coordinating culturally relevant programs and health promotion activities for Indigenous community members.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Health, the RN’s responsibilities include:

CLIENT SERVICE & SUPPORT
  1. Provide specialist advice and resources to Wabano clients;
  2. Ensure medical management of clients, including insulin starts under advanced medical directives;
  3. Develop, implement, and evaluate culturally-based programs and activities to promote healthy lifestyle choices and diabetes education;
  4. Develop culturally-appropriate outreach programs for diabetes education to implement in the community with local Indigenous partners (about 50% of the position will be outreach, social marketing, recruiting new clients, and engaging the community);
  5. Networking and maintaining relationships with other Indigenous organizations and community partners;
  6. Develop and deliver culturally-specific training (for example, to health professionals, volunteers, and community groups) to meet those identified training needs;
  7. Provide specialist advice and resources to other agencies, such as schools, and local non-profit organizations;
  8. Ensure that work is underpinned by both sound, up-to-date knowledge of diabetes education and traditional Indigenous teachings;
  9. Develop diabetes education materials for the urban Indigenous community that meet program objectives and community needs;
  10. Conducting program evaluation and reporting.
RECORD KEEPING

Document the story of the way you support the client’s wellness journey in the internal database using service and cultural codes.

  1. Enter all encounters in the database in a timely fashion and maintain client records in the database;
  2. Document any internal or external referrals to support the client’s healing journey;
  3. Complete monthly reports using the template provided.
AGENCY SUPPORT

Support some key programming as an integral part of the interdependent (interdepartmental) matrix within Wabano.

  1. Assist with functions such as Gala, Symposium, AGA, and community events such as Pow Wows;
  2. Participate in professional development for continuous improvement of skills and knowledge.

 

Qualifications and Skills

In addition to the team management and leadership skills, we are looking for someone who has:

  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing or health sciences;
  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the CNO;
  • Certification from the Canadian Diabetes Educator Certification Board; Or a commitment to obtain one;
  • Experience with youth programming, effective communication with community members;
  • Knowledge of Indigenous peoples’ history and challenges Indigenous youth face in contemporary society;
  • Demonstrated superior problem-solving ability with sound judgment;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; Ability to persuasively communicate complex health messages;
  • Knowledge of available resources in the city and province. Or the ability to research, gain knowledge, and build a partnership with resources outside of Ottawa.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy;
  • Ability to work a flexible work week that may include non-traditional hours, evenings, and weekends.

 

Salary

$65,000- $70,000 per year, plus benefits and pension.
