Planning Consultant - Fraser Valley - Vantage Point

Job Summary
The Planning Consultant is a key member of the Education & Consulting Team in the provision of relevant non-profit education and consulting services to Vantage Point clients across the province. The Planning Consultant – Fraser Valley, identifies, scopes, manages, and delivers a variety of consulting engagements, rooted in strengthening board governance, strategic planning, organizational capacity, and leadership.

Role Responsibilities
Consulting and Facilitation
  • For consulting engagements assigned to you as Lead Consultant, complete project deliverables, which may include undertaking research, conducting organizational assessments, governance assessment and reviews, stakeholder interviews, and group facilitation with non-profit clients;
  • Prepare for and facilitate strategic planning engagements with non-profit clients;
  • Provide advisory support to strategic planning facilitators, including Knowledge Philanthropists, Vantage Point’s skilled volunteer experts, as needed during client engagements;
  • Evaluate deliverables and efficiently manage project timelines, navigating changes to project scope as needed;
  • Facilitate training sessions and educational programs for senior executives and board members from non-profit organizations on a variety of topics including capacity building, leadership, team building, board governance, strategic planning, and more; and,
  • Keep track of trends observed through consulting work and bring learnings back to wider Vantage Point team to inform program development.
Client Development
  • Identify and obtain consulting projects aligned with Vantage Point’s strategic priorities, primarily in the Fraser Valley region, through proactive research, community outreach, and relationship building, and developing new or deepening existing relationships with non-profit organizations;
  • Be the first point of contact for some clients (in conjunction with the Client and Program Delivery Coordinator) to move forward to proposal stage, leading project scoping meetings with non-profit senior staff and/or board leadership;
  • Write and submit proposals that lead to contracts for services; and
  • Increase Vantage Point’s profile in the Fraser Valley region, effectively communicating to Vantage Point members and non-profits in the region the range of our services to ensure we are engaging them in all the services Vantage Point has to offer.
Relationship Management
  • Support the development of Vantage Pont relationships with non-profits in the southern regions of BC, especially the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, and Sunshine Coast regions;
  • Engage in community relationship building to identify and recruit Knowledge Philanthropists (expert volunteers) in the Fraser Valley region;
  • Support Knowledge Philanthropists – particularly those working on strategic planning projects - and build positive relationships between them, clients, and Vantage Point;
  • Ensure client expectations are met and, whenever possible exceeded, in terms of quality of service delivered;
  • Work with consulting and delivery team to develop and track key performance indicators related to this work;
  • Identify opportunities for clients to receive supports and services from Vantage Point beyond consulting by directing them to other team members as appropriate;
  • Refer organizations to resources and supports outside Vantage Point, when necessary;
  • Liaise with VP Associates, paid subcontractors who may be engaged in Consulting projects where Vantage Point staff consultants do not have the capacity, expertise, and/or lived experience to serve as Lead Consultant; and,
  • Assess client feedback and communicate relevant information to facilitators and/or consultants (e.g., Knowledge Philanthropists, VP Associates, other staff).

Qualifications and Competencies
  • 5+ years in a client facing role
  • 2+ years facilitating small groups, ideally as a strategic planner
  • 5+ years experience with the non-profit environment, including direct involvement with Boards of Directors
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience
  • Aptitude for scoping engagements through skillful inquiry to truly understand and assess customer requirements
  • Experience as a non-profit board member and/or governance consultant
  • Ability to draft clear and compelling written proposals and present ideas in an interesting and organized manner
  • Solid organizational skills with a keen eye for detail
  • A highly collaborative approach, demonstrating a commitment to contributing to a positive and inclusive work environment
  • Personal commitment to ongoing learning and delivering work with excellence
  • Strategic thinker with ability to identify and develop new consulting business opportunities
  • High aptitude for technology, including Microsoft Office Suite (including PowerPoint), Online Meeting Tools (eg. Zoom) and CRMs (eg. Salesforce).

This is a full-time, permanent position (35 hours/weekly) with extended health benefits, including enrolment in the Municipal Pension Plan, and flexible work weeks. The position is in job range “I” according to our People Policies which has a hiring range of $87,300 - $97,000 depending on experience.

Vantage Point’s offices are located in downtown Vancouver, with most staff members working in a hybrid format. Travel in BC, primarily across the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, and Metro Vancouver, is expected for this role. This position is ideally located in the Southern Fraser Valley area (e.g., Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Hope, etc.) with the requirement to attend in-person team meetings at the Vantage Point office minimum twice per month. Access to a vehicle is required for this position.
