Position Summary

MWC is seeking a compassionate and experienced counsellor to join our team on a full-time, one-year basis. The successful candidate will provide psychosocial support to migrant workers seeking legal services, connect them with mental health resources, and offer emotional support to participants of our Level Up program. This role requires a background in counselling and at least 5 years of experience working with marginalized communities. The Migrant Workers Counsellor approaches this work from a strength-based, trauma informed, harm reduction and bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one psychosocial support to migrant workers accessing MWC’s legal services;
  • Conduct assessments to identify mental health needs and develop individualized support plans;
  • Connect migrant workers with appropriate mental health support resources and community services;
  • Attend community events where migrant workers gather and provide support and connection to MWC and other services;
  • Assist clients in navigating mental health systems and accessing necessary services;
  • Facilitate group counselling as requested and required;
  • Ensure legislation, standards and guidelines are being followed;
  • Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all conversations and referrals;
  • Provide community education and support programs as requested;
  • Make visits and presentations to various groups and organizations;
  • Proven strength around communication and conflict resolution;
  • Ability to gain confidence and trust from Migrant Workers we support
  • Provide mental health support to participants of MWC’s Level Up program, which focuses on empowerment and skills development; and
  • Support the workshop facilitator in the delivery of Level Up sessions as required.  

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working with marginalized communities, particularly in providing counselling and mental health support. Experience working with migrant communities is a valuable asset;
  • A bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field is required.
  • Strong understanding of mental health issues and challenges faced by migrant workers;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Proficiency in case management and client advocacy;
  • Knowledge of community resources and mental health services in the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan; and
  • Knowledge of a second language commonly spoken by Migrant Workers (e.g., Spanish, Tagalog) is considered an asset.
Drivers Licence is an asset.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is between $66,000 to $76,000 per year, commensurate with skills and experience, plus benefits.

Other terms

We anticipate that the Migrant Workers Counsellor will do a combination of remote-based and in-person work, subject to public health orders and guidance, MWC’s own policies, and individual health needs.
