New Majority will be running a major outreach program this summer to increase youth participation in our democracy. As a component of this program, we are looking to hire approximately 80 Interviewers to have face-to-face conversations with thousands of Canadian youth.

The Opportunity:

As an interviewer, you’ll develop transferable workplace skills like communication, teamwork, and time management. We’ll work with you to identify your learning goals, and through shadowing, hands-on learning, and training in project planning and management, sales and marketing best practices, facilitation, and engagement organizing, you’ll have opportunities to develop specialized skills related to your interests. You’ll build sustained networks with other engaged youth, community groups, and mentors, and you’ll learn about the importance of Canada’s democracy and the power of youth participation.

Some Interviewers will be promoted as Field Managers, who will lead teams of their colleagues.

Tasks and responsibilities

- Participate in training to develop a working understanding of non-partisan democratic and political engagement and the importance of community activism, particularly for youth. Interviewers will also have opportunities to develop additional skills by participating in, promoting, and/or facilitating programs, workshops, and presentations.

- Engage young Canadians in meaningful conversations about Canada’s democratic institutions. Interviewers will approach and engage with the public in a friendly and professional manner; follow scripts in a professional, unbiased way, while utilizing communications skills to adapt conversation as needed; identify and report themes and challenges, and collect survey answers or other information from participants.

- Meet quotas and goals set by the manager, communicate clearly with manager, report to shifts in a timely manner, and maintain mutual respect with co-workers and manager.

- Develop a Community Engagement Plan for your community in collaboration with other Interviewers in your community. This will involve identifying local areas and events, tracking details, and planning attendance. You’ll also need to map community leaders and establish touchpoints with other community groups for ongoing and future initiatives.

You:

Have strong communication skills and a good work ethic.

Are able to work within a team or independently, and value feedback.

Are willing and able to approach members of the public in a fast paced environment and cover a large territory each day.

Can comfortably walk or be mobile outdoors for up to 8 hours a day as possible. We are excited to support mobility needs if this is a barrier.

Bring your own experience and knowledge - no degree required.

As this position is funded through Canada Summer Job, applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, and have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

By hiring young people who are representative of local communities, we make sure we’re having genuine peer to peer conversations. New Majority’s goal is to reach young people who are often left out of the democratic conversation. That means no knowledge of or interest in politics is required - if you love talking to people, working on a team, and bringing the energy all summer long, you’ll be a great fit!
