Position Summary
Vancouver Aboriginal Transformative Justice Services Society (VATJSS) provides Indigenous community members with culturally appropriate alternatives to the mainstream criminal justice system. This position’s primary responsibility will be to connect and support victims of crime to resources in community.  The Legal Resource Worker will provide direct one to one service, and make necessary referrals to programs and supports within surrounding areas to resources and education for those on probation orders in Community Corrections in Metro Vancouver.

Description of Position: This individual will be under the immediate supervision of the CEO and will have the following duties and responsibilities:
  • To do intake process that is trauma informed and culturally appropriate to assist individuals on probation orders carry out Community Corrections plan and reduce risks of recidivism
  • To liaise with and provide referral to appropriate service agencies
  • Advocate on behalf of client
  • Provide culturally appropriate resources/education to Corrections Officers when needed
  • Foster relationships with entities community members have to navigate ie: Legal aid, Community Corrections, Policing, Court Services, parent support, mental health referrals etc…
  • Submit written reports to Senior Management and funders outlining programming activities, work plans, participation in activities, and any other reports as requested
  • Record, compile and submit statistical data as required
  • Participate in relevant conferences, training workshops and related courses and meetings for professional development as required or directed
  • Observe and uphold the policies, procedures and practices of VATJSS
  • Work with other members of the VATJSS team to ensure a holistic program of care is maintained addressing the physical, psychological and social needs of the clients
  • Work collaboratively with other VATJSS staff by maintaining communication lines to allow opportunity to share information relevant to the program, to maintain appropriate referrals to programs and services and to participate in joint programming
QUALIFICATIONS: The Indigenous Resource Worker should have some experience in fields of justice and law, social work, mental health, or related area. Experience and knowledge of Indigenous issues and the current legal system is an asset.
  • Preferred Community College diploma, University degree or equivalent in Social Services and/or a minimum of 4 years work in a social or justice services environment.
  • Knowledge of the judicial system, Criminal Code, and other related federal and provincial statutes, and related court decisions regarding Indigenous persons.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture and experience working with Indigenous persons; understanding of the northern cultural environment; knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of traditional Indigenous justice concepts.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and computer proficiency
  • Assertiveness, self-starter, self-motivated, high degree of professionalism and discretion
  • Organized and punctual and requires little supervision
  • Have a valid driver's license and a reliable transportation an asset
  • Personal integrity and community credibility.
  • Computer skills; with particular knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous cultural and community dynamics.
  • Ability to write reports and keep records
  • Criminal record check clearance for vulnerable sector
WORKING CHALLENGES (Occupational Health and Safety)
There can be frequent exposure to adverse environmental working conditions. These can include verbal and physical aggression, which requires safety precautions and a calm perspective in approaching the situation. There is an expectation of a moderate level of physical exertion in daily living activities, recreation opportunities and dealing with unusual behavioural situations. Some activities may be planned and/or informally designed to build trusting relationships and offer support through physical activity.  Each team member at VATJSS is required to create a “Wellness Plan” and do regular check ins to ensure best practices while working with clients in trauma.

Salary position $52,000 to $56,160/year depending upon experience
