The congregation is multicultural and multi-ethnic - drawing from across the Greater Toronto Area - and is a member of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
Role Overview
- Full-time permanent position (40 hours per week)
- Sunday-Thursday with some flexibility; some evening and weekend commitments
- Compensation: 80k per year, plus full benefits after 3 months (including extended health, dental, vision, pension & 4 weeks of vacation)
- Reports to: Associate Minister, Nick Renaud
- Start date: January 2025
As a member of the Knox staff team, the role of the Discipleship Pastor includes creating and communicating a clear, compelling vision for what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, equipping, mobilizing, and empowering our church body. The incumbent is responsible for guiding, supporting, and shepherding the discipleship ministries at Knox. This includes providing oversight and leadership to Home Churches (small groups), discipleship training, and for the Alpha course.
Responsibilities
Adult Discipleship
- Establish discipleship opportunities for people new to our community
- Develop and implement strategies to intentionally grow people’s spiritual maturity (both for seekers and believers)
- Develop opportunities for people to expand their biblical knowledge
- Expand the corporate outreach/evangelism strategy
- Provide leadership for the Alpha ministry
- Collaborate with other staff and ministry teams to develop consistent discipleship and evangelism practices that reflect the mission, vision, and values of Knox
Home Church Development
- Identify, recruit, and develop leaders for Home Church ministry
- Create and implement strategies for group growth and multiplication
Leadership and Shepherding
- Shepherd lay-leaders and encourage their spiritual growth and the development of their leadership skills
- Provide opportunities for lay-leaders to disciple others (the multiplication effect)
- Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of Home Church and discipleship ministries; Refine and improve as required
- Develop key objectives for discipleship ministries
- Translate the strategic plan to ensure vision and values are expressed in all discipleship ministries
- Regularly meet with the Associate Minister for ongoing mentoring and leadership development
Congregational Engagement
- Coordinate with the other Knox Pastors to identify meaningful volunteering opportunities
- Collaborate with other staff and ministry teams to develop strategies for integrating newcomers into the church community
- Serve as a central contact for volunteers at Knox, encouraging everyone to use their gifts in the ministries of Knox, local outreach and community service
- Develop a sense of belonging and growth in Christ within the congregation
- Participate in worship services (e.g. hosting, making announcements)
Skills & Qualifications
- A mature Christian with a servant heart
- 5+ years experience in mentoring and discipling leaders and congregation
- A relevant university degree or college diploma preferred (theological education preferred)
- Committed to serving others, supporting leaders, and cultivating team ministry
- Proven ability to develop and implement ministry strategies for discipleship
- Demonstrated ability to build community and to work and serve in a multicultural and multiethnic context
- Experience leading and directing discipleship events
- Ability to inspire, equip, train and empower
- Strong relational skills and a high EQ, with keen pastoral instincts
- Strong communication skills both verbal and written, with proficiency in English
- Ability to work autonomously, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and maintain resiliency in a dynamic environment
- Strong project management expertise
- Computer proficiency (Mac OS, Google Docs, Office 365)
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
This position is not eligible for ordination in the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
