Yorktown Family Services - Violence Against Women Services provides a safe, supportive environment for women and children living in abusive relationships. Yorktown Family Services - Violence Against Women Services operates a 30-bed shelter for abused women and children and provides related community programs, namely the Transitional Housing and Support Program and the Women and Communities Against Violence (WACAV) Program, which assists women fleeing abuse who remain in the community and the Here to Help program which is a support group program for children witnessing violence and their mothers.

Yorktown Family Services - Violence Against Women Services provides emergency shelter and crisis support for women and children fleeing abuse. We offer counselling, referrals, a 24-hour crisis line, court escort, advocacy and assistance with housing, welfare, immigration, medical and legal services, children’s programs, early intervention for child witnesses of woman abuse, transitional support for women living in the community as well as those leaving the shelter.

Primary Function Yorktown Family Services Violence Against Women Services is seeking a Counsellor that will partake in a variety of activities to ensure the provision of supportive counselling, case management, and crisis intervention to abused women living at Yorktown Shelter for Women.

Responsibilities:
  • Work collaboratively, harmoniously and effectively as a member of the Shelter team
  • Conduct intake, assessment and discharge procedures
  • Ensure the provision of effective trauma- informed counselling including: case management, the development of support & safety plans, client advocacy, life skills coaching, crisis intervention, discharge planning, group facilitation, conflict mediation, and service referral
  • Develop and maintain contact with a network of community support workers, professionals, and agencies, and refer clients accordingly
  • Perform administrative functions specific to the overall functioning of the shelter and perform daily functions associated with the operation of the shelter
  • Develop and maintain client records
  • Ensure the provision of public education and outreach specific to the impact of violence on women and children
Qualifications:
  • Completion of a Bachelor of Social Work degree or equivalent education and experience
  • Previous experience in a similar position an asset
  • 1 – 3 years experience working with abused women
  • Knowledge of the impact of violence against women
  • Knowledge of the Shelter’s existing policies, procedures and guidelines specific to client care
  • Demonstrated record of displaying effective team leadership skills.
  • Established positive working relationships with community partners in the VAW sector
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • Experience in group facilitation and a related understanding of group dynamics
  • Cross-cultural awareness
  • Second language an asset
