The Health & Wellness Centre at the University of Toronto Scarborough provides health promotion, primary care and counselling services in an interprofessional shared care model. The team delivers student-focused care and support that is compassionate, culturally responsive and evidence-based and supports students in achieving their goals and potential by inspiring hope, promoting healthy choices and supporting the healing process. Working under the direction of the Director, Health & Wellness Centre, the incumbent provides personal counselling using solution/goal-focused psychotherapy primarily to students at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The Counsellor/Therapist is responsible for providing counselling and psychotherapy to individuals, facilitating psycho-educational workshops and counselling groups/group therapy.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Following rules and procedural processes related to Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
  • Assessing the mental health of clients
  • Liaising with the health care team to facilitate appropriate internal resources referrals for students in crisis
  • Developing components of treatment plans based on appropriate therapeutic approaches
  • Developing psychotherapeutically-appropriate materials for group counselling and intake procedures for clients
  • Providing clinical counselling and psychotherapy to individual students and/or groups of students and making referrals to appropriate resources
  • Exercising extreme care to prevent serious physical or emotional injury or harm
Essential Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in counselling psychology or social work or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Must be in good standing with professional college.
  • Minimum five years related experience in a community mental health setting and/or outpatient mental health unit performing client intakes/assessments, crisis counselling, brief or short-term counselling to individuals and psycho-educational workshops.
  • Extensive experience with mental health and illness, behavioural issues, anger management, and conflict resolution.
  • Experience working with young adult population.
  • Experience with addiction assessment and treatment in individual and group settings.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and competency in maintaining confidentiality of client information according to FIPPA and PHIPA legislation.
  • Strong knowledge of community resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students, staff and faculty in ways that build confidence and trust.
  • Able to work in a highly diverse community with students from varied backgrounds and a variety of age groups, presenting with a range of difficulties and personal issues.
  • Good judgment, sensitivity, flexibility, discretion and resourcefulness.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work professionally and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and senior administrators about issues facing students in crisis and make recommendations.
Assets (Nonessential):
  • Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as female with lived experience as a member of the Muslim community.
  • Experience working with post-secondary students and knowledge of university and community mental health resources.
  • Trauma informed counselling experience, life coaching, mindful based therapies and alternative evidence-based therapies.
  • Lived experience with oppression, racism, homophobia, transphobia and/or ableism and/ or connection to Black, Indigenous, and Racialized communities, including newcomer and disability communities.
  • Formal training/certification in two or more types of psychotherapy (e.g. cognitive behaviour therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, internal family systems, acceptance and commitment therapy, etc.) and in dual diagnosis/concurrent disorders.
  • Fluency in a second language.
