Sexual Violence Counsellor and Advocate

  • The Sexual Assault Centre of Brant is a gender-informed, equity-seeking organization which seeks to create healing and change in our community.

  • The Counsellors are responsible for providing individual, trauma-informed counselling both in person and remotely. While some service users may prefer to utilize the service remotely, it's expected that the counsellor will be able to provide the counselling in person from our King George Road location in Brantford or from satellite locations in the County of Brant

  • There are several positions available ranging from 14 to 35 hours per week.  The hourly rate is $35.  The contract will be a minimum of 12 months in duration.  

  • Work week configuration is negotiable and but will require weekday and day-time (9 to 4) availability. Evening availability would be an asset. Exact hours will be determined based on client need and availability of the counsellor

  • We hope the successful candidate(s) will be able to start as soon as possible,  on or around October 28, 2024.  

Responsibilities of the role:

  • Provide individual counselling to service users of all genders, who are survivors of sexual violence. Some positions will have an adult case load and some will provide service to youth aged 13 to 19.  

  • Provide emotional and practical safety planning for people who are experiencing a current lack of safety. Help folks expand their circle of support with resources and therapeutic homework.

  • Provide support, advocacy, and accompaniment to service users on caseload who are navigating systems associated with their experience of sexual violence.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • An intersectional analysis of sexual violence; this analysis includes understanding the way that age, ability, race, indigeneity, queerness and trans-ness impact experiences of violence and support- seeking.

  • A commitment to working within an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and decolonial framework.

  • An understanding of how gender impacts sexual violence because SAC is a gender INCLUSIVE but not "gender neutral" organization.

  • Trauma-informed counselling and advocacy experience in any setting.

  • Experience working with survivors of sexual and gender-based violence is an asset.

  • Healing-based engagement or advocacy with any population that experiences systemic oppression is an asset.

  • The ability to respond to multi-faceted demands, to rely upon your own initiative and to work with minimal supervision in a crisis-response environment.

  • Studies (either completed or in progress) that support this work.
