Location- VAWS – Shelter Site
Yorktown Family Services - Violence Against Women Services provides a safe, supportive environment for women and children living in abusive relationships. Yorktown Family Services - Violence Against Women Services operates a 30-bed shelter for abused women and children and provides related community programs, namely the Transitional Housing and Support Program and the Women and Communities Against Violence (WACAV) Program, which assists women fleeing abuse who remain in the community and the Here to Help program which is a support group program for children witnessing violence and their mothers.
Yorktown Family Services - Violence Against Women Services provides emergency shelter and crisis support for women and children fleeing abuse. We offer counselling, referrals, a 24-hour crisis line, court escort, advocacy and assistance with housing, welfare, immigration, medical and legal services, children’s programs, early intervention for child witnesses of woman abuse, transitional support for women living in the community as well as those leaving the shelter.
Job Summary
The Cook/Nutritionist will ensure the nutritional needs of the clients are met by preparing healthy meals and will also provide educational workshops and programs to the clients on everyday nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

Job Summary
The Cook/Nutritionist will ensure the nutritional needs of the clients are met by preparing healthy meals and will also provide educational workshops and programs to the clients on everyday nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively, harmoniously and effectively as a member of the YSW team.
- Adhere to YSW policies and procedures
- Daily meal preparation for the residents and children residing at the shelter
- Liaise with food distributers regarding food orders and delivery
- Set up meetings with new residents to inform them of the kitchen rules and assess the dietary needs of the family
- Organize the Kitchen and Pantry area (including refrigerators and freezer)
- Monthly menu planning
- Organize all food donations
- Keep kitchen area tidy including laundering dishtowels, washing pots and pans
- Facilitate programs such as: Nutrition and Fitness Classes for Women & The Children’s Summer Cooking Program
- Participate in Supervision with the Manager of Operations on a bi-weekly basis and/or as required
- Respond to emergency situations in accordance to established procedures and guidelines
- Organize all shelter events i.e. Holiday festivities, Black History Month celebrations etc. as directed
- Assist clients with their meal planning based on health requirements
- Completion of a post-secondary Diploma in Food and Nutrition Management or equivalent education and work experience
- Current Food Handlers Certification and must be able to provide a valid Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Screen
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification
- Experience with daily food preparation for large quantities of individuals (i.e. 30+ people) and for larger events
- Ability to adjust menu plans to adhere to the changing dietary/cultural needs of the clients
- Good time management skills
- Cross-cultural awareness
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
