Burnaby, British Columbia

Join our Team as Community Relationship Builder!

About Us

Curiko is an innovative community platform that sparks more moments of connection between people whose bodies and brains work differently, creating the conditions for equal relationships and good lives. We exist to disrupt longstanding patterns of exclusion and isolation that keep too many people with and without disabilities living separate and apart. We are looking for a people person who takes initiative, thrives in a fast-paced environment, loves building community, and can toggle between emergence and structure. If you are wanting to contribute to meaningful social change in creative ways, keep reading.

About the Role

The Community Relationship Builder creates, plans and actualizes wonderfully delightful ways to meet individuals, organizations and businesses and draw out their curiosities and passions. On Curiko, any community member can host an experience, and any community member can go on an experience. Experiences can be on any topic – from anime to ableism to animal care – and in many formats, including group, 1:1, and boxes. The Community Relationship Builder sources and shapes novel experiences on the platform, forging relationships with all kinds of people and strengthening their motivation and capacity to share what they love with others. You will be part of our quirky & imaginative Curiko team, where every Builder brings their own unique flair, skills, talents, network and passions to the team to help expand the breadth and depth of platform offerings. This is a role with a lot of versatility and agency, including a mix of in-person activation work (like running pop-up stands, door knocking, and networking) plus more developmental work (like designing strategies, doing research, coaching hosts, and creating materials).

As a team, we’re keen to source experiences that connect broadly with the world of spirituality, culture and the humanities to enable people to share their inner passions and deep questions with others. In this role, you'll catalyze experiences which prompt more beauty, awe, wonder, perspective, introspection, and connection in our lives. These might be experiences drawing on literature, art, humanities, philosophy, theology, culture, and so much more.

Key Responsibilities

  • Community outreach and mobilization for networking and awareness raising with individuals, organizations, businesses, groups, etc.
  • Recruiting community members to join the platform to host an experience or to participate in an experience
  • Facilitate moments of reflection and evaluation with hosts and community members
  • Working with Curiko Comms role to co-design content with community members for use in newsletter and social media campaigns
  • Designing and implementing inventive recruitment & activation strategies
  • Building and maintaining relationships with folks from all walks of life, organizations and businesses
  • Motivating, coaching & collaborating with community hosts on the platform to create engaging and inclusive experiences
  • Soliciting and acting on feedback from community members
  • Organizing and keeping track of leads & contacts
  • Reporting any platform bugs
  • Recording qualitative stories of impact and quantitative metrics to inform strategy
  • Recruiting, onboarding, and supporting peer roles on the platform
About You

We’re looking for an energetic self-starter who loves making big and small ideas happen. Are you …
  • Participatory and inclusive -- engaging and learning from people with different lived experiences to you is a value you try to practice
  • Curious and open-minded -- willing to give things a go, receptive to feedback, warm & welcoming to all
  • Courageous and assertive - not afraid to take action, and approach unfamiliar people and situations with excitement
  • Playful and beauty seeking - you appreciate play & whimsy, and don’t see beauty & delight as ‘extras’ but as core to memorable experiences
  • A strategic systems thinker - able to dig into problems to find and execute scaleable solutions, with a penchant for working backwards from desired outcomes to plot out clear action steps
  • Collaborative team player - will take initiative, step-up, and lend a hand even if it’s not in your job description
  • A clear communicator - can translate ideas for different audiences, and spark others’ interest & motivation
  • Gritty and resilient - you don’t take rejection personally and are all about learning by doing; you really model a growth mindset!
  • Intellectual curiosity without ideology and rigidity- you gravitate towards big ideas, and have some fluency with different cultural, spiritual, and humanities disciplines or practices
About Your Background

We’re not plussed by degrees or academic qualifications. We care more about your mix of skills and lived experiences. Do you have …
  • A wide range of experience in volunteer management, community building initiatives, and stakeholder engagement?
  • A real interest in creating inclusive communities & experience engaging across lines of difference?
  • A track record of creating and implementing campaigns and activations? This might be online or in-person!
  • A proven ability to hustle and quickly toggle between different areas of thought and tasks?
  • Comfort and skill with technology (we are a tech-enabled platform, after all) -- able to troubleshoot and manage backend functions to support the running of the site
  • Event planning, design, and making skills are huge assets
What We Offer

We are a small, non-profit start-up that offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits package ($55K/year plus extended medical & dental benefits, car allowance & pension). What can’t be captured in numbers is the enriching work culture you get to join and actively shape. We describe it as a culture of ambition, curiosity, experimentation, and total possibility!
  • Flexible hours- Life doesn’t happen just from 9am-5pm and we get that. There’s a few non-negotiable times of the week that we like to huddle together to strategize and reflect, but otherwise can be pretty flexible.
  • Supportive team- We take a strengths-based approach to working with the community and we try to embody that in the environment that we co-create. We’re all about weaving our different skills, disciplines & experiences together.
  • Ongoing learning- We embody a growth mindset. You might not be good at something yet, but we work to get you there. How? We offer opportunities to hone your skills and fail. Yep, we think people learn more from failing than success. So this is a pretty safe place to experiment and try new things.
  • Exposure- Curiko is incubated by social design organization, InWithForward. That means, you get exposed to a wide array of social science and human-centered design approaches, and get to draw on a wide pool of talent.
  • Impact- Lots of people talk about problems or what they wish could be different. We don’t talk, we do something about it. You’ll get to actively tackle stigma and prejudice, and find fresh ways to connect people across lines of difference.
A little more about us

We actively encourage and support applicants from underrepresented communities.

How to apply

Does reading all of this leave you feeling intrigued and excited? Do you find yourself nodding along? We’d love for you to apply! We run a pretty unique hiring process where you’ll get a feel for the role and our culture!

Please send along
  • A short video sharing a bit about yourself and what excites you about the role. Tell us: Why you, and why this role? What will you bring to it?
