Oceana Canada is an independent charity committed to rebuilding Canada’s oceans by winning science-based policy victories that increase biodiversity and abundance. We have successfully campaigned to ban single-use plastics, end the shark fin trade, make rebuilding depleted fish populations the law, improve the way fisheries are managed and protect marine habitat. Oceana Canada is part of the largest international advocacy group dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Globally, Oceana has won more than 200 policy victories for marine life and habitats. From stopping bottom trawling in sensitive habitat areas to protecting sea turtles from commercial fishing gear, our victories represent new hope for the world’s oceans. 
 
Oceana Canada is hiring a Communications and Digital Marketing Coordinator to lead campaign and digital communications in support of Oceana Canada’s growth and engagement goals. This position reports to the Director of Digital and Campaign Communications and is responsible for creating engaging content for web, email and social media, including design and video production.

The Communications and Digital Marketing Coordinator will also lead communications for one of the organization’s core advocacy campaigns. This position will work closely with colleagues that have expertise in communications, campaigning, government relations, fundraising and science, collaborating across different functions and expertise to help Oceana Canada win policy victories to protect the ocean. The successful candidate will bring experience to the team in digital strategy, campaign communications and project management, and possess superior communications skills. This position requires a creative approach to digital marketing and content production, a detailed understanding of analytics and reporting, brand management, supporter cultivation, and content planning. Principal duties and responsibilities

  • Lead communications for a core Oceana Canada advocacy campaign, in collaboration with a campaigner, including developing a communications plan and executing on tactics that support campaign goals.
  • Manage projects across interdisciplinary teams, including developing communication strategies, overseeing workbacks, incorporating edits and meeting project deliverable timelines.
  • Lead design and video production, both managing projects in-house independently and working with external vendors as appropriate.
  • Lead Oceana.ca updates, including adding blogs, refreshing the homepage and adding new campaign material, working closely with a digital team to implement SEO best practices.
  • Write, edit and design compelling content for Oceana Canada’s digital channels, including video, working with external vendors as needed to produce content.
  • Create educational and entertaining content that prioritizes community engagement, including content for Oceana Canada’s Marine Life Encyclopedia and Educational Resources.
  • Support community monitoring on social media and email marketing.
  • Collect and analyze digital metrics and keep tracking systems up to date. Support producing monthly reports to inform campaign strategies.
  • Source and catalogue image and video assets, ensuring proper crediting and usage.
  • Support in managing budgets, receipts and coding expenses and hours.
  • Stay abreast of ocean news, events and digital best practices.
  • Other duties as needed.

Requirements 

  • Degree in digital marketing, communications or related field, or comparable work experience.
  • One to three years of digital marketing experience.
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing channels, social media, email marketing, SEO and marketing automation tools.
  • Excellent analytical skills and experience with digital analytics and reporting.
  • Expertise in content creation and design, both creating and working with vendors.
  • Creative problem-solver with well-developed organizational skills.
  • Extensive experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and leading project coordination across them.
  • Strong project management experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator, including presenting concepts, editing and proof reading, and attention to detail.
  • Interest in ocean conservation, advocacy and change-making.
  • French language proficiency an asset.
