Client Support Worker, Financial Trustee - Evangel Hall Mission

Summary

Client Support Worker Financial Trustee provides money management services and advice to our clients, helping people with little to no financial literacy to make good financial decisions. The primary goal of the program is to ensure that clients’ money is managed effectively in order to pay rent on time and to maintain housing; the secondary goal is to assist clients with their day-to-day banking and budgeting needs.

Working both independently and as a team, Financial Trustees will liaise with partner agencies, landlords, health care providers, income supports, housing providers and community services to support clients.
This position involves daily in-person client meetings in our offices and ongoing case management and documentation duties.

Financial Trustee also support other drop-in functions when needed, to help prevent and appropriately handle crisis and ensure the peace and safety of drop-in participants, volunteers and staff, to mentor placement students in collaboration for the betterment of client services.

Reports to: Drop-in Manager

Status: Full-time, one-year contract, tentative starting date of mid July

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:30/8:00 am to 3:30/4:00 pm

Location: 522 Adelaide Street West, Toronto

Founded in 1913, Evangel Hall Mission (EHM) is a multi-service agency that provides support to people who are experiencing homelessness and poverty. Our Drop-In offers hot meals, showers, laundry facilities and respite from the elements. Clients can access spiritual care, volunteer and employment opportunities, information & referrals and voluntary financial trusteeship from EHM staff. They can also access a range of supports from community partners onsite at EHM, such as Narcotics Anonymous, vaccine clinics, nursing care, legal clinics, programs offered by Toronto Public Health and many more.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Conduct intake and assessment interviews with participants Provide voluntary financial trusteeship for program participants, including arranging appropriate benefits and entitlements from OW, ODSP, pensions, etc. Assist participants with access to income and financial management as required Provide one-to-one assistance, case management and life skills education. Provide detailed assessment, support planning and advocacy
  • Work with participants to identify and to achieve goals related to their finances
  • Use QuickBooks to record day to day financial transactions
  • Verify that all data entry is accurate and liaise with our Finance Department to perform monthly reconciliations of accounts
  • Support housing issues (rent payment, housing standards, etc) and liaise with landlords as required
  • Form positive relationships and strong partnerships with partner agencies
  • Support other drop-in functions when needed. Help prevent and appropriately handle crisis. Ensure the peace and safety of drop-in participants, volunteers and staff
  • Connect participants with supports in the community that will help them achieve and maintain stability
  • Maintain accurate case management records and complete all reporting requirements
  • Ensure that all policies and procedures are adhered to. Work with the trustee team to review all policies and procedures to ensure that we are meeting best practices
Skills and Aptitudes:
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent data entry and record keeping skills
  • Strong commitment to anti-oppressive practice
  • Ability to perform tasks according to assigned deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize workload
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Highly proficient in QuickBooks or similar accounting software and the ability to use Excel functions including tables and other basic functions
  • You demonstrate personal excellence and honesty, exhibiting the highest standards of commitment and responsibility 
  • You have good assessment skills, and make sound judgment and decision-making
  • You enjoy collaborating with others to support achievement of positive results
Qualification and Experience:
  • Post-secondary degree in social services, the social sciences or related field, related work experience – anyone with bookkeeping experience strongly encouraged to apply
  • At least two years of related work experience
  • Demonstrated ability to provide non-judgemental support to participants from diverse ethno cultural backgrounds, socio-economic status and sexual orientation
  • Experience working with clients who have been homeless, live with addictions and/or mental health illnesses
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Working knowledge of government support programs such as OW, ODSP and CPP
  • Working knowledge of financial planning

  • You will work 37.5 hours per week, Mondays to Fridays.
  • You will be based out of 552 Adelaide St West in downtown Toronto.
