At Harmony House we believe that every child and youth have strengths and the right to succeed in life, regardless of their life circumstance.  We are looking for a qualified Childcare Worker to work in our Childcare.  The goal of this program is to help equip the participants with the tools they need to move beyond the trauma they may have experienced, giving them a better chance to achieve success, and ending the cycle of abuse for the next generation.  

This is a 30 hour a week permanent position.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this position is to work through a trauma informed lens bringing structure and fun into the lives of the children and youth living in the shelter.   

Job Summary

Working under the supervision of the Child and Youth Program Supervisor, the Childcare Worker plans and facilitates a daily curriculum of activities designed to help prevent and address gender-based violence and support the survivors.  This position will mainly involve working with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. However, during PD Days, March Break, and Summer Camp, this position will also be working with children and youth 5 to 13 years of age.  In addition, this position may be called upon to assist with the Afterschool Program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The main duties and responsibilities of this position includes, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and plan fun, educational and skill developing activities that incorporate program goals and creative expression, are suitable for the age ranges living at the shelter

  • Assist the children with fine and gross motor skills and the development of concentration skills

  • Assist the children with the process of separating from their parent, and offer emotional support when required

  • Provide participants with the appropriate leadership in a warm and caring atmosphere during the program 

  • Provide homework help as needed by the program participants 

  • Assist with maintaining the Childcare Room and storage area in a clean and orderly manner, including washing/disinfecting toys, blankets, mats, and other equipment, and cleaning floors as necessary

  • Ensure necessary documentation is received and appropriately signed for program registration, and permission for field trips 

  • Accompany children on field trips, including trips the local parks and recreation facilities

  • Report on any issues or incidents that arise with participants to your supervisor and/or the parents’ frontline worker 

  • Communicate with parents during the drop-off and pick-up times to establish a good relationship  

  • Help facilitate and supervise snacks and meals as necessary 

  • Set up planned activities, and clean up afterwards  

  • Gather and maintain program data for evaluation 

  • Other appropriate duties as assigned

Education, General Skills and Experience:  

  • Knowledge of child and youth learning activities 

  • Ability to work effectively with children and youth of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds  

  • Awareness and knowledge of cultural and physical differences and needs of children and youth 

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, with the ability to build positive and collaborative working relationships with individuals and teams 

  • Good conflict management and dispute resolution skills 

  • The ability to motivate children in the program 

  • Sound judgment and excellent problem-solving/crisis management skills 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working with children and youth in a similar facility

  • A graduate of a diploma program in Early Childhood Education; Child and Youth Care; Working with Children, Youth and Families; Early Learning and Community Development; or similar programs preferred.  Number of years of work experience will be taken into consideration in lieu of formal education.

  • Valid Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector

  • Current First Aid and CPR training

Working Conditions

  • Physically able to participate in all activities planned for participates

  • May be required to lift/move furniture from time to time

  • May be exposed to all weather conditions during outdoor activities

  • Must adhere to all policies and procedures of Harmony House
