The Opportunity:

beyond 3:30 is a unique initiative that provides after school programming focused on healthy living and learning opportunities in the arts for middle school children, Monday-Friday in one of the places they trust the most, their local school.  It supports priority communities through innovative partnering between a wide variety of local community organizations and corporations. beyond 3:30 is operating in 18 select middle-school locations across the city.

Academic Support Staff plans and implements a variety of homework, tutorial and academic support activities, as well as literacy and leadership clubs.  Positions are ideal for energetic Bachelor of Education graduates or those in the process of completing their degree in Education. 

Responsibilities:
  • Organize and facilitate the Homework Club to assist beyond 3:30 participants with their homework, projects, special assignments, literacy, numeracy and study skills
  • Provide individualized academic tutoring to beyond 3:30 students based on the Ontario curriculum
  • Create customized assignments for students to ensure practice and better understanding of material
  • Liaise with Site Coordinator to discuss workplan and students’ progress
  • Implement equitable and well-balanced assessment strategies
  • Lead health and wellness workshops, discussions, and debate activities
  • Demonstrate and implement proactive problem-solving, conflict mediation, and behaviour management skills to engage students
  • Serve as a role model in conduct and character for students in high priority communities 
Position Contract: August 10, 2024 – June 23, 2025, 3:00pm – 6:30pm, Monday to Friday

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors’ Degree in Education or relevant experience (current teacher candidates are welcome to apply)
  • Demonstrated experience in educational and recreational program planning and delivery
  • Exceptional skills in program facilitation, group dynamics, and effective guidance and discipline techniques with middle school age children
  • Excellent communication, leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Exposure to working with students with different learning styles
  • Enthusiastic and culturally-competent attitude toward working with students in priority neighbourhoods
  • Experience working with BIPOC communities is an asset
  • Understanding of Ontario curriculum and school board operations and procedures - an asset
  • Must have first aid and HIGH FIVE training or willing to obtain them shortly after being hired
  • Must obtain a Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check (VSS) upon hiring.
