Cannabis, AI, Agriculture and More: Jobs in Insurance You Wish You Had

by

Insurance.  You might think of home, auto, or even other types of personal property!  But, there’s a whole lot more to it.  In fact, the industry touches a wide array of areas including agriculture, the world of business (e.g. financial institutions), analytics, cyber security, autonomous vehicles, drones, cannabis, AI, and more…

We sat down with two industry professionals who have had rewarding career paths to date in the industry and work in some pretty interesting areas of insurance.  Let’s meet them now…

First up is Aryan Roy.

Aryan is a Commercial Underwriter specializing in agricultural (farm) insurance.

How did you get your start in the insurance industry?

Playing with numbers always interested me. I saw a job posting from Wawanesa Insurance looking for Underwriters and one of the required skills was “strong mathematical skills”. I decided to try it out! Once I started working in the industry and engaging in the risk analysis, decision-making, and relationship building that an underwriter does as a part of their role, I fell in love with insurance and knew it was for me!

Tell us about your career journey to your current role:

At first, I started as a Junior Underwriter with the company. Within a few months, I was an assigned branch trainer and liaison. I also began to specialize in agricultural insurance and undertale my leadership training as a potential leadership candidate within my company. As soon as I finished my Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation, I was promoted to a senior role, which I am currently in. The industry offer the potential to progress rapidly and I feel more challenged each step I take – which keeps me engaged.

What do you like most about your career in insurance and why did you choose this industry?

It is not one thing – I like working as a team with other great people. I enjoy providing customer service for the community I live in, and I enjoy the fact that insurance challenges me constantly. Each day, I come across something new and different, which makes things interesting. Choosing insurance has been a worthwhile journey!

Now, let’s meet Suela Dibra.

Suela is a Manager, Business Intelligence & Analytics with close to 15 years of experience in the insurance industry.

How did you get your start in the insurance industry?

One of the professors I worked with while attending Western University sent my resume to the President and CEO of PACICC, Paul Kovacs (a well known industry thought leader who specializes in the reduction of catastrophic loss, climate change, and emerging industry trends). I had one meeting with Paul which ended with “When can you start?”. This was my first break in the insurance industry. I never thought of insurance as a career choice until I got my first job in the industry.

What do you like most about your career in insurance and why did you choose this industry?

When starting my career in insurance, I was captivated by the wealth of data the industry has access to that can be used to do both qualitative and quantitative analysis. I find working with data and telling stories using data quite fascinating. Also, insurance is an industry that touches almost every aspect of our lives. The insurance industry helps people, restore businesses, and better our communities.

What piece of advice would you offer to someone looking to connect to a career in insurance?
