Some of you going back to school may have a mix of online and in-class learning. Although online learning has many benefits, online learning while in the midst of a pandemic is a whole other story. Let’s break down some of our top 5 tips to set you up for success this fall.
Tip #1 – Invest in making your space work for you
Ensure that wherever you’re staying, whether you’re still at home, or living with roommates, that you have a dedicated and comfortable space to study and do your work. Maybe it’s worth it this semester to splurge on a supportive chair that you’ll be spending a lot of your time in. Making your space free from clutter while adding a pinch of inspiration will make sitting down to work way more enjoyable and much more comfortable.
Tip #2 – Set a schedule and stick to it
Once you have your class schedule in hand (or – online), take the time to block out what a week in the life of Fall 2020 you will look like. Make sure to mark any important due dates once you have your syllabus and work backwards to slot in study and work time. You aren’t just learning for 2-3 hours in a lecture and then never revisiting the course work again – you have to schedule in time for readings and reviewing your notes too! Your future mid-term stressed self with thank you for that later.
Tip #3 – Eliminate distractions as much as possible
Try your best to set up your space from tip 1, in a distraction-free zone. Can’t completely separate yourself? Try out some noise-cancelling headphones or once your schedule is set, sit down with your housemates to set some boundaries for quiet time.
Another big distraction is your phone! Allow yourself breaks in between chunks of dedicated work time, where you can scroll Instagram guilt-free.
Tip #4 – Take Breaks!
Speaking of breaks… What’s that saying…? All work and no play makes so and so a dull boy? Burnout is a real thing and although it can be easy to get lost in time sitting at your computer for hours, you need to take breaks. Go for a walk, or grab a coffee, or maybe FaceTime your BFF who’s taking the same course as you. Whatever your break looks like, make sure you’re taking the time to disconnect from school work to help recharge your brain.
Tip #5 – Connect with others!
Being in class, it’s sometimes much easier to connect with other students, whether you’re doing a group project or networking with peers. Although we love social media, it can be difficult to connect virtually through online learning. Be sure to take advantage of online study groups – or start your own! It’s a great way to swap course material, make new friends and still feel socially connected. Plus if you have to miss a class, you know that you have a network of people who can give you hand and vice versa.
