You’ve graduated with a degree in accounting (or something along those lines) and maybe you are struggling to land a job or, if you have landed a job, you’re looking for ways to get ahead.
Or perhaps you aren’t quite sure which direction you want to take your degree in.
Either way, there are a ton of options for students and new grads looking to further their education (and beef up their resume) in this field.
We thought we’d give you taste of a few different options of how to continue your education in accounting beyond the BComm:
Master’s programs in accounting
Master of Accounting
University of Waterloo offers this master’s degree program to students who have previously graduated from Waterloo with a Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management, BMath in Chartered Accountancy Studies or BSc in Chartered Accountancy Studies. Designed for those planning a career as a Chartered Accountant, this post-grad program is aimed at students wishing to focus specifically on the accreditation process.
Master of Taxation
This one-of-a-kind master’s program is made to position graduates as valued professionals in the Canadian tax community. Although offered through the University of Waterloo, all classes are held in downtown Toronto. Areas which are covered range from estate planning and business structuring to risk management and policy research. Those eligible for this program include graduates from Canadian business programs who are interested in pursuing a career in tax, or individuals who are currently in the tax industry and are looking to solidify and expand their expertise. If taken full-time, the program consists of three school terms and three work terms. Part-time studies involve a total of six school terms.
Post-graduate education in accounting
Diploma in Accounting
Alongside its Master of Accounting program, the University of Waterloo also offers a Diploma in Accounting as a UFE preparation program for CA candidates. The 51-hour program includes four courses: Contemporary Issues in Assurance, Control Systems in a Computer Environment, Public Accounting Practice, and External Reporting.
Post-Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting Practice
Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ont., offers this certificate to those who have graduated from programs other than accounting. This one-year program is available on a full- or part-time basis and requires that you have either a diploma or degree from an accredited college or university, or have equivalent experience in the business sector. Post Graduate Certificate in Accounting
The Post Graduate Certificate in Accounting at the University of Windsor’s Odette School of Business is a 12-course program for graduates of any degree, however the program’s prerequisites include Business Finance and Statistics courses, so you need to at least have some business background to enter the program, otherwise you’ll be required to complete the prerequisites before entering the program.
