You may not know it, but the retail pharmacy market in Canada is extremely competitive.
As a leading Canadian drug store Rexall is always evaluating how the company is doing and what they can do to deliver the best possible pharmacy health care to their customers and patients while continuing to grow.
That’s where finance professionals like Svetlana Correa come in.
“I knew I wanted to become a Certified General Accountant (CGA) and Rexall has certainly provided me with the opportunity to do so.” —Svetlana Correa, Finance Labour Analyst, Rexall
She’s a Finance Labour Analyst in the Finance department at Rexall‘s home office in Mississauga.
“Accountants perform a vital role in assessing and understanding how well the company is performing,” she says.
“It is essential that the financial information reflect the performance of the business and providing accurate information is a primary responsibility of an accountant in order to facilitate better decision making.”
While some accounting students dream of starting their careers with a traditional account firm, Svetlana first recognized a unique opportunity with Rexall when she completed a co-op work term there last summer as a Commerce student at Nipissing University.
“Frankly, I don’t see any reason why students would not want to be employed at a prominent Canadian corporation like Rexall,” she says. Throughout her work term, Rexall provided excellent training and hands-on learning opportunities. “I knew I wanted to become a Certified General Accountant (CGA) and Rexall has certainly provided me with the opportunity to do so.”
Learning on the job
Svetlana’s manager – who she refers to as a teacher and mentor – introduced her to new tasks every week during her work term, giving her the opportunity to work with different people and expand her skills.
“There were times after my work term was finished when I would be in class listening to my professor and I would think to myself, ‘Hey, I learned this already at work’ or ‘I understand this much better because I was exposed to these concepts while working at Rexall.'”
Her colleagues also helped her apply the material she learned at school to real-life business practices. “Everyone here at Rexall is extremely friendly and knowledgeable,” she says.
Building healthy communities
“I cannot emphasize enough how satisfying it is to work for a corporation with a strong sense of social responsibility, which contributes to the progress and welfare of society.”
Rexall isn’t just a retail pharmacy business – it’s also dedicated to building healthy communities. “Rexall is very community-oriented and supports many charities and causes that promote health and wellness,” Svetlana says.
Through the Rexall Foundation, the company supports over 200 Canadian health-related charitable organizations or causes, such as the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation and Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation. Last summer, Rexall employees from the company’s home office and GTA stores also volunteered at at Camp Oochigeas – a camp for kids coping with cancer in Northern Ontario.

Pursuing an accounting designation at Rexall
Given all of the positives Svetlana experienced during her co-op work term at Rexall, returning full-time upon graduation was a no-brainer: “I always knew I wanted to be a part of this company, so I did my best to demonstrate my qualifications for the position,” she says. “I proved that I was the right person for the job because of my strong work ethic and willingness to learn.”
Currently, Svetlana is enrolled in the CGA program and Rexall is providing her with the skills and knowledge she needs to obtain her designation.
“The professional experience that I have gained and continue to acquire will fulfill the professional prerequisites needed for certification, and will be conducive to my success in the accounting industry,” she says. “Rexall provides you with an abundance of resources to help you grow professionally while also giving you the opportunity to work with amazing people.”
