Anthony Wong is a recent Simon Fraser University communications grad who is currently working as a Content Intern at online eBook retailer Kobo.
On a day-to-day basis, he’s responsible for making sure the books they receive from publishers are totally perfect before they go onto the Kobo website. He verifies prices, corrects errors, and checks that the books are complete from start to finish.
Anthony says the best parts of his job are the work environment and the people he works with. It’s a challenging job and sometimes he is required to work longer hours than normal, but he loves it and his colleagues make it an even more enjoyable experience.
Kobo offers plenty of opportunities for employees to have fun together, such as company sports teams, a stress-relieving games room, and fun company Town Halls.
Anthony is grateful for the diverse skills and knowledge he’s been able to acquire at Kobo – he’s learned a ton about the publishing industry since starting his internship. He says it’s important for students and recent grads to diversify their skills and knowledge because you don’t always know exactly what you want to do or where you’ll end up.
If you want to be attractive to employers, he recommends that students stay busy and get as much as experience as possible – even if it’s not glamourous work. He thinks it was all the freelance work he did that helped him land this internship at Kobo.
