A Day In The Life Of A PwC Associate – Part 2: Fun And Culture

by

For University of Alberta Bachelor of Commerce graduate Helen Kirvan, starting her career at PwC hasn’t been all work and no fun. She’s discovered that PwC provides many ways to get involved in the community and enjoy work-life balance.

These are some of Helen’s favourite aspects of PwC’s culture:

Paid time off to volunteer

PwC offers staff members one paid day off each year to volunteer at firm organized team volunteer activities. In May, Helen had the opportunity to lead a team in volunteering with a small, not-for-profit organization that helps people cope with cancer. She says she really enjoyed co-ordinating with her colleagues and the charity to make a difference in the community.

In 2010, over 41% of all PwC employees took advantage of the team volunteer day to help make a difference by contributing 17,123 hours of paid time off at one of over 319 team volunteer activities.

Flexibility

Helen says PwC is flexible in so many different ways, which makes it a great place to work.

Aside from Flexible Summer Fridays, Alternative Work Arrangements and Remote Working, PwC also offers Flexible Time Away; this program gives you the opportunity to take unpaid time off over and above your annual vacation entitlement to pursue personal interests. Last year, one of Helen’s colleagues spent the entire summer in Thailand!

Even PwC’s $500-a-year fitness benefit is flexible – last year, Helen used it to buy her own skis and went skiing in Banff every weekend (lucky!). This year, she’s using her fitness benefit toward lift tickets. Others have used it for gym memberships, golf fees, tennis lessons, snowboards, karate gear, boxing gloves and more.

Helen also loves the flexibility of PwC’s rewards and recognition programAcclaim is a points-based program to reward someone for their hard work. Each year you’ll get points to give to others. You’ll receive them too. You can redeem them right away or save them up and use them for trips or shopping sprees. After only one year, Helen has already accumulated nearly enough points for an iPad 2!
