Softchoice’s A/R Supervisor Started Her Career In Accounting With An Arts Degree – You Can Too

by

Cathy Giallo is Softchoice’s Accounts Receivables and Treasury Supervisor, where she manages about a dozen people on a daily basis.

You might think that she’d have to have an accounting or finance background to work her way up to such a senior role, but she actually has a Bachelor of Arts in history and psychology from York University.

That’s right, you can work in accounting without an accounting or finance degree!

Giallo says students and recent grads with unrelated educational backgrounds who want to work in accounting will be hired by many organizations, including Softchoice, as long as they’re willing to start from the bottom and work their way up by getting experience and maybe even pursuing additional education or certification in finance and accounting.

Softchoice is supporting Giallo’s career advancement by reimbursing her for the continuing education courses she’s taking at Ryerson University. That’s why she says the two best things about working at Softchoice are the people and the support. She says work-life balance and personal growth are strongly encouraged and supported.
