Since 1978, WUSC Local Committees have sponsored student refugees to resettle in Canada and pursue their higher education through the Student Refugee Program (SRP). WUSC is the only organization in the world that combines resettlement with post-secondary education. This unique sponsorship model includes vital support for at least 12 months upon arrival in Canada.
Nature and Scope:
Reporting to the SRP Manager - Overseas Programming, the Senior Program Officer has responsibility to coordinate the overseas components of the SRP for a given region, as well as participate in related engagement activities. More specifically, the Senior Program Officer will:
1. Coordinate the overseas components of the SRP in a given region
- Maintain partnerships with international agencies (e.g. UNHCR, IOM), WUSC field offices, immigration officials, and others who support the selection, placement and immigration processing of sponsored students;
- Coordinate and participate in the overseas recruitment and application process of SRP students;
- Liaise with stakeholders, referral groups, Citizenship and Immigration Canada offices overseas, and other agencies to facilitate the immigration process of selected sponsored students;
- Coordinate with team members responsible for in-Canada SRP programming to ensure the effective implementation and placement of the sponsored students on Canadian campuses;
- Ensure that the SRP Manager, overseas programming, is informed of significant issues and developments with regards to the program in the assigned region.
2. Monitoring of SRP Students and Outreach to SRP Alumni
- Support the annual evaluation of the Student Refugee Program;
- Monitor SRP student integration and progress throughout their sponsorship period.
- Maintain up to date SRP student databases;
- Participate in the implementation of new initiatives that will enhance SRP students’ integration, such as a mentorship program for SRP students;
- Identify new opportunities to support SRP students and engage with SRP alumni.
3. Program Development (PD)
- Contribute to the conception and design of new initiatives related to the SRP and to refugee education in the assigned region.
4. Collaborate across teams (Campus Engagement , Communications, Fundraising, etc.) to support the implementation of volunteer training, public engagement and fundraising activities
- Participate in providing SRP training and capacity building activities for WUSC Local Committees;
- In collaboration with the Communications unit, generate material for various audiences and stakeholders for print, electronic and other media;
- Participate in SRP alumni engagement activities.
- Represent WUSC and the SRP at national or international conferences as required;
- Keep abreast of the international refugee situation, global resettlement priorities and the Canadian Government’s policies as they pertain to refugee resettlement and global refugee protection;
- Occasional international travel for student selection or stakeholder relations.
- University degree in international development, refugee studies or related field;
- A minimum of 5-7 years related experience including 3 years in project or program management;
- Relevant work experience in a developing country and/or countries of asylum for refugees;
- Solid work experience in:
- developing and managing effective partnerships
- refugee and/or immigration issues
- Canadian immigration law and regulations
- program monitoring and evaluation
- budget management
- workshop facilitation, training delivery and tool development
- volunteers and youth
- Flexibility, with a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate high levels of responsibility and multiple priorities;
- Passion and commitment to gender equality and youth empowerment;
- Preference for working in a team environment.
- Superior technical and business writing skills;
- Analytical thinking;
- Effective interpersonal and influencing skills, including the ability to build relationships, network, communicate and represent at a senior level;
- Organization and administration skills;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Excellent facilitation and presentation skills.
- Complete fluency, oral and written in English and French;
- Additional languages would be an asset, including Arabic, Kiswahili and other languages of relevance to refugee populations in the Middle East and East, Central and Southern Africa.
