The Registered Nurse (RN) is an integral member of the interdisciplinary health care team at the University of Toronto Scarborough Health & Wellness Centre.
Under the supervision and coordination of the Manager, the Registered Nurse, licenced by the College of Nurses of Ontario, provides professional nursing care, utilizing full nursing scope of practice in accordance with established standards of care, policies and procedures; while adhering to the University of Toronto Health & Wellness Centre vision, mission and strategic plan. Inherit in this role are the knowledge, skills and judgement specific to critical thinking and decision making, ability to analyze and assess presenting physical and mental health concerns and collaborate with the medical team in the management of these health concerns.
This is done by providing support to physicians during clinic hours, triaging walk-in clients, providing primary care for illness, injuries and other health concerns, health teaching on a variety of topics and intervention for students in acute distress. This position is part of an inter-disciplinary team of health care professionals and is broken into three main focus areas of practice: triage, clinic and RN health teaching/counselling. The remainder of the role provides clinical and administrative support to the Health Services Clinic and team.
Duties include: performing a comprehensive and focused physical and mental health assessment that includes health history and relevant evaluation; conducting suicide and mental health risk assessments; developing appropriate health plans in collaboration with the client and other service providers; participating in client care case conferences to ensure coordinated, comprehensive and holistic services; participating in the planning, development, delivery of health care plans, utilization of effective screening tools, medical directives and policies/procedures; providing education related to healthy living, prevention of injury, illness and communicable diseases, care and treatment, and support systems as appropriate to the client situation.
Education : Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) required. Current registration, in good standing with no practice restrictions, as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Liability insurance or membership in a professional association which offers liability insurance (i.e. RNAO).
Experience : Minimum five (5) years of clinical practice in primary health (i.e. Family Practice, Community Nursing, Occupational Nursing, Emergency), including experience in mental health. Current CPR certification. Must have current BCLS, First Aid certification preferred. Venipuncture experience required. Knowledge in the practice of evidence based nursing in a primary care setting combined with a genuine interest in young adults.
Skills : Computer skills required (Electronic Health Record platforms, Word and Microsoft Outlook). Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.

Prioritizes and manages time effectively and is flexible in an active work environment. Knowledge of primary health care, mental health, and social determinants of health. Understands and utilizes appropriate nursing diagnosis. Understands and demonstrates College of Nurses Standards of Practice guidelines including but not limited to ethics, confidentiality, and documentation. Understands the role of Health and Safety within the University. Understands and abides by the concepts of PHIPA.
USW Pay Band 14 -- $75,959 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $97,142. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
