Laboratory Technician

Faculty/Division: Faculty of Medicine
Campus: St. George (downtown location) 

Description:
Under close supervision of the PI, the incumbent will provide basic laboratory support for a molecular pharmacology and neuroscience laboratory. Key duties include: performing routine assays techniques, cell culturing, and preparing solutions; handling of rodents, including monitoring behavioral tests and assisting with minor animal surgeries; prepares standard reports/calculations; performing partial general laboratory maintenance and assisting with experiments as needed.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelors of Science degree or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Background knowledge in biological sciences is preferred.

Experience:
Minimum 1 year of experience in a pharmacology laboratory, including experience with cell culture, immunohistochemistry and GPCR signalling. Demonstrated experience with animal handling and assisting with simple rodent behavioural experiments, including administration of injections, assisting with stereotactic surgical procedures and assisting with standard behavioural tests. Experience monitoring lab inventory and maintaining lab equipment, and demonstrating laboratory procedures and protocols to students and lab members. Experience with culturing of mammalian cells, standard biochemical and molecular techniques, including electrophoresis and immunoblot applications. Experience with in situ receptor protein complex and RNA expression in brain is an asset.

Skills:
Advanced skills in MS Office Suite. Working knowledge of research laboratory equipment and demonstrated experience with laboratory animal handling. Must be familiar with safety and hazard protocols in a laboratory environment. Excellent manual dexterity and reproducibility.

Other:
Ability to work effectively independently as well as in a team environment with supervision. Excellent record-keeping and time management skills; ability to meet timelines; adaptable and willing to contribute to other lab activities when requested; exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills; and be organised with strong attention to detail.

Pay Scale Group and Hiring Rate: USW Pay Band 06 -- $47,005 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $60,110. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol
