This Junior Group Underwriter role focuses on non-refund and mid-size refund cases.  Working with minimal supervision, incumbents will assist the division to meet established sales and profitability targets by performing a defined range of underwriting activities that lead to the accurate assessment of all risk elements inherent in the sale of new and/or renewal of existing group insurance policies, meeting turnaround time and quality standards.

The focus of this position is to price for acceptable levels of profitability, to manage an assigned block of business for rating and/or financial purposes and/or assigned new business opportunities and to ensure proper risk selection for Sun Life Financial (SLF).  Incumbents may also provide full technical support and assistance to Senior Underwriters.

The main responsibilities of this role are:

  • Analyze and assess acceptable levels of risk for assigned caseload of moderately complex cases, by thoroughly assessing and analyzing all client information supplied and funding/financial arrangements, relative to the established specifications or existing coverage levels. ¬†Another important aspect of this role is the provision of year-end and periodic financial accounting and reporting
  • Analyze experience, assess risk and provide recommendations for rates and retention charges
  • Make assessments and recommendations in accordance with established compliance and operational procedures
  • Work independently or seeking advice from senior underwriting team members to develop costings for plan improvements, cost containment, and/or retention/conservation in accordance with SLF procedures
  • Work in collaboration with senior underwriting team members to develop both standard and customized assessments/solutions, as the case specific situation warrants
  • Ensure financial reports and letters of agreement accurately reflect SLF intentions, and are released within appropriate time frames
  • Appropriate application of accurate information supplied to support the quotes and plan recommendations made to our Account Executive team
  • Assist with the development of client reports and internal management reporting documents, ensuring delivery within target turnaround times


  • University degree with strong math and computer skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel (testing may be administered to potential candidates)
  • Completion of industry related courses or agreement to complete the Group Benefits portion of CEBS in the first two years in underwriting
  • Proficient in written and oral French
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including verbal, business and technical writing
  • Ability to think outside the box

  • Knowledge of financial underwriting principles and techniques
  • Knowledge of SLF operating environment, group and individual products and business unit interactions
