CityNews Toronto is looking for an Associate Producer for a part-time 12 month contract. The ideal candidate has strong, versatile writing skills and extensive experience in a newsroom. You have a passion for local news, strong editorial judgement and you are looking for an opportunity to learn and grow while working alongside a talented, innovative and fun team of journalists. Writing, chasing, researching, producing, pitching, interviewing, vetting, and more writing – you are adept at doing it all in a fast-paced environment. You will bring unique ideas about covering diverse stories in Canada's largest city.

What you'll be doing:

  • Working as part of a team, you will create fast-paced, compelling and informative news stories airing on CityNews Toronto, various other CityNews broadcasts across Canada and our digital properties
  • Writing content under tight deadlines for our newscasts and our digital properties
  • Assigning resources to gather news elements
  • Monitoring social media for developing stories and to track breaking news
  • Emailing, Tweeting, calling and interviewing people as you chase and research enterprise story pitches
  • Pitching during daily creative brainstorms and story meetings
  • Meeting deadlines and prioritizing work when news breaks
  • Ensuring that content is factually and grammatically correct
  • Screening footage from internal and external libraries and other resources
  • Developing a network of local contacts
  • Various editorial and newsroom tasks as required, including: recording feeds, pulling stock footage and creating graphics

What you have:

  • Minimum 2 years of TV and/or digital news producing, writing or reporting experience
  • Ability to work individually and part of a team
  • Creative vision and keen editorial judgment
  • Superior writing, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Control room and field production experience an asset
  • A journalism diploma or equivalent experience
  • Sound communication skills
  • Shift work required (mornings, evenings and weekends)
  • An appetite to learn and grow
