Who we are
We are looking for a bright and energetic person to join our IBM Compiler and Enterprise Project Team. Compilers are used by the largest banks, insurance, health and retailers in the industry. You interact with it at least ten to twenty times a day with backend transactions generated from mobile enterprise applications. You will become part of the team that will assist in the Z Systems digital transformation.

The Position
As a Design Researcher, you have a proven record of uncovering user needs and solving real user problems. The candidate's research insights will be integrated into products used across the world by thousands of our customers. The desired candidate must have a passion to identify and connect with our target users and become their advocate in influencing our products to meet their needs. 

You'll have the opportunity to work with design colleagues and members of other disciplines
including development and offering management as well as a world-wide community of other UX designers. Our Design practice continues to evolve, and we have industry-standard tools at our disposal. We're also fully invested in IBM Design Thinking, and infuse these principles and practices into everything we do.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Conduct research using a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative methods
  • Work cross-functionally with design, product management, and engineering to prioritize, plan, and deliver on research initiatives
  • Synthesize user feedback via hands-on team discussions in order to translate insights into actions and requirements
  • Use Lean and Agile practices to uncover your recommendations quickly, collaborate with other designers and disciplines, and shepherd actions to completion
  • Facilitate team activities to create and maintain personas in order to build team empathy for real users; use those personas in storytelling techniques such as empathy maps and as-is/to-be journey maps
  • Evangelize the importance of design research as part of IBM Design Thinking and educate product teams new to design research methods in order to help them integrate real users into their design life cycle
  • Ability to clearly communicate benefits and insights of user research in a way that generates empathy amongst cross functional teams of designers, engineers and product managers
  • Ability to adapt existing research methods to the project's needs and to define new research methods according to the organization's need.

An up-to-date design portfolio This role will involve working with technology that is covered by Export Regulations sanctions. If you are a Foreign National from any of the following US sanctioned countries (Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria) on a work permit, you are not eligible for employment in this position.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • English: Fluent
  • Design Degree, Degree in Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Science, Anthropology or related discipline.

Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

  • One year of practical experience doing design thinking is preferred.
  • One year of practical application of Agile is also preferred.
