Description
Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization that was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of partner organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Frontier College is accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards program.
 
Frontier College has partnered with Department of Family Services of the Government of Nunavut to deliver literacy and essential skills support to apprentices, tradespersons and individuals wanting to enter the building trades.  Literacy and essential skills (LES) are defined as reading, writing, document use, numeracy, digital technology, thinking, oral communication, working with others, and continuous learning. The main focus of the program is on trades math and science, language and literacy support.
 
Frontier College started this initiative in Iqaluit in 2016 and is now expanding its offering to new communities of the territory. The Instructor-Coordinator will work closely with participating construction employers and trades stakeholders in Kinngait (Cape Dorset) and Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet), to design and implement programming that addresses the specific needs of individual participants.
                                                                      
We are seeking Instructor-Coordinators (ICs) to work closely with participants, community partners, and businesses to implement the project in Kinngait (Cape Dorset) and Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet), Pond Inlet. The ICs will assess needs, provide essential skills upgrading support through tutoring and instruction, and ensure that participants are able to achieve their goals and eligibility requirements to move forward on their apprenticeship path. The IC develops and maintains project partnerships, establishes and delivers individualized learning plans, and may recruit and manage volunteer tutors.
 
 
Overall Accountability
The ICs are members of the Frontier College staff team of Nunavut and Inuvialuit region and is directly responsible for volunteer tutors (if applicable). This position reports to the Program Manager, Nunavut and Inuvialuit Region.


 
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Promote and advertise program on a continuous basis through community outreach and media promotion
  • Assess participants to determine their LES needs and to develop customized training plans along with learning goals
  • Ensure that training resources and supports are reflective of the academic and practical applications of the program and future apprenticeship path
  • Design and deliver academic upgrading instruction, particularly in the areas of math, science and essential skills
  • Mobilize, train, supervise and support volunteer tutors (if applicable)
  • Develop, maintain and strengthen relationships with trades sector partners
  • Maintain learner files, track statistics and contribute to overall project evaluation and reporting
 
Skills and Attributes
  • Teaching Degree (preferably in the Intermediate/ Senior division with a math or science teachable) or equivalent experience teaching adults or in the Trades Sector
  • Knowledge of literacy, essential skills and adult education principles
  • Ability to develop tools and strategies for various learning styles
  • Energetic, responsive, resourceful
  • Tolerant of ambiguity and flexible to change
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule – evening work/weekend work will be required.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication
  • Computer skills (MS Word, Outlook, Excel and Internet)
  • Organized, able to manage multiple tasks and deal with stress
  • Possessed a positive learning attitude
 
Additional Assets
  • Knowledge of Inuktitut is an asset
  • Experience working/living in the Arctic region is an asset
  • Experience working in a trades context and knowledge of apprenticeship process
  • Experience working in community settings
 
Compensation: We offer an attractive compensation package, excellent benefits and a chance to work in a supportive environment. Housing will be provided in Kinngait (Cape Dorset) and Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet).
