Team & Job Overview

The EDC Special Risks Team is responsible for managing all recovery efforts on impaired loans and guarantees in EDC's commercial lending portfolio.  The team’s responsibilities generally include the management of out-of-court workouts, bankruptcies, restructurings, and asset liquidations. The team is regularly consulted by EDC’s various financing teams and is responsible for setting internal provision rates.  

Reporting to the Director of Special Risks, the new Associate or Senior Associate will primarily be focused on contributing as a junior team member in the management of distressed transactions under EDC’s Export Guarantee Program (EGP) and may also provide support for managing distressed loans in the commercial markets and small business sector.  The EGP is a risk sharing mechanism that guarantees facilities at qualified financial institutions.  We are looking for a dynamic and motivated professional who will actively manage a portfolio of distressed EGPs and small business loans.

Discipline Summary  

  • Manages a portfolio of distressed debt;
  • Negotiates changes or develops documentation as required, in collaboration with legal counsel;
  • Responsible for on-going customer service throughout the credit adjudication process;
  • Makes credit recommendations and obtains all required approvals.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Thoroughly understand all aspects of EDC’s Export Guarantee Program and commercial markets and small business sector lending program, including EDC’s market position, risk appetite and related guarantee and loan documentation;
  • Review EGP claim submissions, prepare transaction recommendations, participate in the credit adjudication process, and negotiate and structure key documentation;
  • Contribute as a team member in providing transaction risk analysis and loss mitigation assessments;
  • Regularly communicate and manage internal relationships with financing, business development and legal teams;
  • Regularly communicate and manage external relationships with bankers, lawyers, receivers, and trustees;
  • Complete assigned tasks/special projects as assigned by the Director.

Screening Criteria   

  • Undergraduate degree in Business Administration or Bachelor of Commerce, or completion of an MBA, all with a specialization in Finance/Accounting or in a related field
  • Minimum of 1 year (Associate level) or 3 years (Senior Associate level) of experience in commercial/corporate lending, structured and project financing, and managing special risks transactions, or other relevant work experience
  • Solid knowledge of commercial lending practices, common financing structures, and security
  • Strong credit analysis, risk assessment and negotiation skills
  • Strong preference will be given to bilingual candidates (English and French) 


  • CFA designation 

Salary Range 

  • Associate: Level 1: $73,000 - $109,000, plus performance-based incentive
  • Senior Associate: Level 2: $86,000 - $128,000 plus performance-based incentive
