This role is with Numida in Uganda, through Engineers Without Borders Canada (EWB)’s Fellowship program.
Numida is a fast-growing Ugandan fintech company that is building the digital products and services that African small businesses need to thrive. Our first product is a financial management app that enables Ugandan entrepreneurs to keep good records, make better decisions and access convenient and unsecured credit. Entrepreneurs use the app to keep track of their cash flows and we use the cash flow and financial management behavioral data to determine their creditworthiness and issue loans via mobile money.

About the Role and Summary of Work
We are looking for a Junior Mobile Developer to join our engineering team. Our flagship product is a React Native mobile app that enables small businesses in sub-Saharan Africa to keep track of their cash flows and access convenient and unsecured loans that are dispersed through mobile money.
We're a small, fast-moving startup working with modern technologies based out of Kampala, Uganda and San Francisco, California. Our core belief is that the potential of African small businesses is constrained due to the lack of appropriate digital tools that they need in order to thrive. We're looking for a like-minded frontend engineer committed to making an impact for small businesses in sub-Saharan Africa using modern development tools and practices.
Who We’re Looking For
Numida envisions a future where African small business owners have the tools and resources they need in order to reach their full potential. We are working on one of the biggest problems in African financial markets – how to give a profitable unsecured loan to a small business?
First and foremost you must believe in the power of developing world small businesses to create jobs, pay taxes, and drive development and poverty reduction in their communities. Beyond that you have a proven track-record of being a fantastic team player with the humility required to build tech for the developing world.
Specific Technical Requirements:
- 1+ year(s) working with React (React Native and Redux experience is a plus)
- 2+ years developing frontend web applications using modern web frameworks (Backbone, Angular, Ember, React)
- Native Android development a plus
If you are selected for an interview by Numida you will need to submit a code sample of some work you are particularly proud of. Examples could be:
- Reusable Frontend/React Components
- Custom Redux Middleware
- Elegant frontend state-management code
- Android App: React Native, Redux, with fully-offline data storage and sync
- Backend: REST API using Django and Django REST Framework
Please note: You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or landed immigrant in order to apply. No exceptions.
All costs relating to the placement are either paid for directly by EWB (airfare, insurance, vaccinations, trainings) or indirectly through a living stipend, which covers food, living expenses, local travel, etc. Fellows also receive an honorarium that can be used to assist with repatriation costs that is provided after completion of 12 month contract. The stipend covers basic living expenses for a modest lifestyle in your placement country. It is not likely that you will be able to use the stipend to cover previous expenses (ex. student loans). However, EWB will do its best to support you in extending the non-repayment period on student loans if necessary.
Additionally, EWB offers a range of benefits including insurance, a settlement allowance, professional development opportunities, and more.
Numida also has an Early Employee Share Options pool which is being made available to EWB Fellows.
Submitting your application for the EWB Fellowship involves two steps:
Step 1: Under the subject line “Junior Mobile Developer - Numida”, submit your CV/Resume to firstname.lastname@example.org.
