The Seniors Services Department of Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services is currently accepting applications from qualified applicants for the position of Meals on Wheels (MOW) Program Assistant.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Meals on Wheels (MOW), the MOW Program Assistant is responsible for providing support to the MOW program by performing a variety of duties. These duties focus on ensuring that clients of the MOW program receive the services they have requested, Dixon Hall staff have the resources they require to serve clients, and volunteers experience opportunities that are both meaningful and supportive of the goals and mission of the MOW program and Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services. The MOW Program Assistant job is highly interactive and requires the touch of a person who enjoys meeting and working with new people on a regular basis.


Operational Responsibilities:

  • Assist with scheduling, directing and supporting the Meals on Wheels volunteers.
  • Print daily route sheets for drivers and runners.
  • Respond to client inquiries, issues, and/or concerns.
  • Provide volunteers with appropriate instructions, materials, and support.
  • Work with staff drivers to ensure that meals are picked up from food providers as required by the daily program schedule.
  • Communicate client updates to the Meals on Wheels Supervisor.
  • Report any volunteer issues or concerns to the Manager, Volunteer Programs and Meals on Wheels Supervisor.
  • Follow up on any client problems or emergencies, inquiries and complaints and communicate critical information to the Meals on Wheels Supervisor.
  • Deliver meals when Necessary.
  • Liaise with food providers and partners, as required.
  • Ensure that the kitchen is restored to order at the end of each shift.
  • Foster positive relationships with clients, volunteers, and staff.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain client documentation and statistics.
  • General data entry.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the department and Manager and other Dixon Hall staff and volunteers.
  • Actively participate in department and agency meetings and events.
  • Work under the guidance of the agency and program policies and procedures, including the Mission, Vision, and Values of Dixon Hall.
  • Meet regularly with the Meals on Wheels Supervisor to discuss individual, team, and program effectiveness.


  • Relevant University Degree or college diploma; foreign degree equivalency recognized.
  • Experience working with seniors and disabled adults.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written English language communication skills; fluency in additional languages will be considered an asset.
  • Adaptable to meet changing requirements of the role.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Attentive to details; strong follow-through skills with the ability to take initiative.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Experience supervising or managing volunteers.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced work environment.
  • Experience and knowledge of various data bases and Windows-based applications.
  • An active, valid driver’s license is considered an asset.
