Affiliate Director for Destination Imagination British Columbia (DIBC), a global leader in teaching the creative process from imagination to innovation. This position is responsible for the day-to-day management and growth of the program as well as the financial health of the organization in British Columbia.


Destination Imagination is the global leader in teaching the creative process from imagination to innovation.

The mission of Destination Imagination British Columbia is to provide programs and experiences that empower learners to develop the skills and creativity to improve their lives and communities.

The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), and service learning.  Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the creative process.  Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.

Currently, Destination Imagination impacts more than 200,000 children in 30+ countries annually.  These children are supported by more than 38,000 volunteers, many of whom are alumni or parents of participants.

The Affiliate Director for British Columbia is responsible for the day-to-day management of the program, the growth of the program, and the financial health of the organization in British Columbia. 

The experiences and skills necessary to be successful in this role include:

  • An understanding of and passion for the Destination Imagination program;
  • Event planning and management;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to recruit, train and inspire a large number of volunteers on many different levels;
  • A demonstrated ability to work well with school age children and adult volunteers;
  • The ability to work independently;
  • The ability to travel regularly throughout British Columbia and, on occasion, out of province to the United States;
  • The ability to be the ‘Public Face’ of the organization and an effective advocate for the program – attending local and provincial conferences, speaking at parent/teacher related events, etc.;
  • Excellent presentation skills;
  • Self motivation, attention to detail, creative problem solving skills, and the ability to improvise and adapt;
  • Ability to develop ongoing relationships with all levels of educators throughout BC and other related organizations;
  •  Ability to manage expenses to remain within budget;
  • Ability to develop relationships;
  • High level of self awareness;
  • Thrives in a fun, energetic and nimble work environment.

Experience working in a non-profit environment is an asset as is living in the Lower Mainland.  In addition to managing day-to-day operations, the person should have vision and be capable of working with the Board of Directors to help grow the program, and to move the organization in new directions when appropriate.  The Affiliate Director reports directly to the President of British Columbia Original Minds Association (BCOMA)

Job Description

Position Summary: BC Original Minds Association is a registered charity; Destination Imagination is the main program offered by BCOMA and is governed by a Board of Directors.  A primary function of this role is developing and delivering content, workshops and coordinating tournaments. Teams choose one of seven challenges and work on their solutions to pre-set challenges over the course of November to February.  The rules of each challenge requires comprehensive understanding and review of the challenges when they are released every summer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program director for DI programs in BC
    • Events where AD supports Regional Directors who take the lead (unless no Regional Director is present, in which case the AD manages these tournaments)
    • Create and maintain a data-base of expertise, i.e. people with appraising experience, score room workers, team managers, etc.
    • Identify and develop leadership in key areas such as Regional Directors, Challenge Masters, and Trainers to support provincial growth
    • Manage all DI memberships across the province
    • Identify and reach out to offer and facilitate the program to underserved students
    • Active fundraising for the program
    • Grow corporate sponsorship base
  • Promote the DI program across BC
    • Speak on behalf of the DI program to various groups
    • Handling day to day inquiries about the program via phone and e-mail
    • Manage all social media and website/newsletters
    • Create and manage a marketing program designed to increase meaningful participation across province
    • Maintain communication with the existing DI membership across the province
    • Recruit and maintain Regional Coordinators (Okanagan, Vancouver Island, Powell River, Nelson/Castlegar, Prince George)
    • Constant communication with Regional Coordinators, update trainings, program, send material accordingly
    • Summer camps: Identify recurrent organizations that offer recurrent summer camps or after school programs. Prepare a data base. Contact them and offer the program, organize presentations, workshops and Try-DI
  • Liaise with national and other affiliate organizations
    • National organization contact
    • Fall Planning Session (all RDs)
    • Represent BC at Destination Imagination Affiliate Director meetings
    • Certify affiliate and regional challenge masters (experts on yearly challenges in affiliate)
    • Certify teams advancing to Global Finals
    • Review and comment on AD communications
    • Continue to be part of the organizing committee of the Canadian National Tournament
  • Additional Functions & Requirements of the role:
    • The Affiliate Director is the face of the Destination Imagination Educational Experience
    • Flexible work environment; some evening and weekend work will be required
    • Involves travel throughout the province of British Columbia and  some international travel
    • Ability to travel in British Columbia and to the United States
    • Must have own reliable car
    • Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
    • Computer skills – word, excel spreadsheets, google docs, power point, etc.
    • Ability to manage  a Website and other online communication tools
    • Ability to work from home office
    • Ability to work with children and adults
    • Current and ongoing criminal record check
    • Ability to effectively manage a complex budget

Compensation and Work Environment

  1. Salary for this position is between $58,000 – $65,000 annually, with 15 days of paid vacation per year. Extended benefit plan with benefits consistent with the Standard Benefit Plan by OASSIS currently being provided to the Employee will be provided. BCOMA recognizes all British Columbian statutory holidays currently in force and will recognize any future statutory holidays declared by the provincial government.  These days will be paid in accordance with the formula in the Employment Standards Act of BC.

The Affiliate Director will operate a home office and submit for reimbursement any expenses over and above the operation of such an office.  These expenses may include but are not limited to computer equipment; a printer/scanner; a Smart Phone (policy outlined in Schedule “C”); office supplies and other miscellaneous expenses. All supplies and equipment purchased by BCOMA is owned by the organization and to be returned upon end of employment. The Affiliate Director will be reimbursed for all reasonable travelling expenses incurred on behalf of BCOMA as well as all other reasonable expenses incurred while conducting business on behalf of BCOMA.
