Job Description
What you’ll be doing
As a student on our Global Investment Banking, Energy, Infrastructure and Transition (“EIT”) team, you will be making a real difference to our clients by helping to provide customized financing and advisory solutions. With offices located in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia, our Global Investment Banking group provides equity and debt underwriting as well as corporate finance advisory services to corporations and institutions through a number of industry and product groups. This is a great opportunity to be a part of a group of professionals ranging from Analysts to Managing Directors who are dedicated to advising clients on infrastructure and project finance and mergers and acquisitions.
The Calgary-based Energy, Infrastructure and Transition (“EIT”), Investment Banking office focuses on a broad range of energy and infrastructure clients that operate in the following sectors: oil and gas, pipelines, midstream energy infrastructure, renewable and thermal power, utilities, and energy transition / climate-tech. We support these clients with strategic advice, equity and debt fundraising, and corporate finance advisory services such as mergers and acquisitions.
The technical experts (engineering, geology and geophysics professionals) on the A&D team work collaboratively with the IB team and are responsible for a variety of analytical tasks associated with upstream oil & gas asset characterization, analysis of company and resource play data, provide technical inputs into financial models, preparation and marketing of asset and corporate opportunities and develop asset-level insights and thematic pieces.
Our landscape is continually evolving and in addition to traditional mandates, we are highly focused on assisting our clients in:

Integrating new power sources, such as renewables, into their businesses

Capitalizing on new technologies, such as power storage, carbon capture, renewable natural gas and hydrogen

Financing infrastructure to deliver Canadian energy, such as liquified natural gas, to global buyers

Positioning their businesses for resiliency and investor engagement.

How you’ll succeed

Research and analytics – You will provide a broad range of analytical, research and presentation preparation support to the team.

Project management - You’ll be assigned to a variety of transactions and advisory projects such as mergers & acquisitions, divestitures, equity and debt financings, strategic advisory/alternatives projects and full capital structure solution projects.

Quantitative analysis – You will apply your strengths in quantitative analysis to create and direct complex financial analysis and models while extracting the “big picture” implications of such analysis.

Data analysis – You will analyze company and play data, providing technical inputs and developing asset-level insights that underpin all M&A advisory work at CIBC Capital Markets

Database management – You will be responsible for generating and maintaining databases, including: capital cost estimates, operating cost estimates, corporate base declines and asset retirement obligation estimates, etc.

Industry knowledge – You will compare and contrast relative play performance across all plays in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (Montney, Duvernay, Oil Sands, etc.). You will develop an awareness of activity, trends and developments in the Canadian and international energy industry.

Communication – You will create presentation material for corporate strategy pitches, marketing materials and other general presentations to senior leadership of various E&P & midstream clients.

Relationship management - You’ll gain exposure to working with individuals from various groups across the firm and our team approach to executing coverage and financing assignments is designed to provide progressive on the job training.
