Job Description

What you'll Be Doing

The Capital Markets arm of CIBC provides integrated capital markets products, investment banking advisory services, corporate lending and top-ranked research to corporate, government, institutional and retail clients around the world. Our goal is to be the leading Capital Markets franchise in Canada and the lead relationship bank for key clients globally. CIBC Capital Markets consists of three lines of business: Global Markets, Global Investment Banking and Corporate Banking.

CIBC‘s Debt Capital Markets (“DCM”) group is engaged in advising, structuring and originating debt securities across a broad range of government, corporate and financial issuers and sectors in Canada. The group is actively involved in executing transactions in both the public and private placement markets to institutional and retail investors in Canada.

As part of the DCM business, you will become an integral part of the fabric of CIBC’s Toronto-based trading room. The trading room environment is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring you to effectively process information in the course of executing transactions in a constantly changing market environment. The successful candidate will therefore need to adapt to these conditions with creativity, energy and an entrepreneurial spirit in order to meet the evolving demands of the marketplace.

This position requires the individual to be an effective communicator capable of building relationships both internally and with clients. You will have the responsibility of providing detailed analytical, financial modeling, structuring, research and transaction support to senior professionals in your business, helping to win business and execute transactions.

How You'll Succeed

As an Analyst in the Government Finance group, you will provide analytical support to senior origination and syndication professionals, including:

  • Assisting in the structuring, execution and documentation of new issue debt transactions

  • Assisting in the preparation and distribution of communications regarding new issues (internal, syndicate, and investors)

  • Assisting in the preparation of client presentations/pitches 

  • Conducting credit analysis and financial modeling for prospective issuers

  • Coordinating the provision of indicative new issue pricing information for public and private offerings (C$ and U$) to provincial governments, government-sponsored pension funds, and SSA clients

  • Promoting non-benchmark offerings to Global Sales team

  • Assisting in the overall monitoring of Canadian debt capital markets (flows, trends, funding opportunities)

  • Develop and maintain database for investor feedback related to new issues including reverse inquiries

  • Assisting in the preparation of transaction documentation and ensuring timely settlement

  • Working closely with Global Markets, Corporate Banking and Investment Banking as part of the overall client coverage team

Who You Are

  • Undergraduate University degree in Finance, Commerce, or Mathematics

  • 1 - 2 years of related business experience would be an asset

  • Working knowledge and proven interest in pursuing a career in Capital Markets

  • Demonstrated self-starter

  • Proven ability to pay close attention to detail and multi-task under tight deadlines

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills

  • Willing to work extended hours in a high pressure/high reward environment

  • Strong inter-personal skills, good team player

  • Strong multi-tasking and time management skills
