Underwriters in general weigh the risks associated with a prospective customer’s business, determine if the business meets Chubb’s criteria of acceptability approve or decline the risk, negotiate contract terms, determine pricing, and work closely with independent brokers to manage the business they place with Chubb.
From the moment you join Chubb, you will begin the process of learning and applying a variety of underwriting skills. You will be given a “book of business” to manage and your success will come from your own efforts. To be successful, you will need to cultivate and maintain strong relationships, with your assigned group of external brokers. This will allow you to learn more about their clients’ needs and encourage the broker to submit us their business. Your strong relationships will make your brokers want to choose you and Choose over the other insurance carriers they do business with.
Once a risk is submitted, you will investigate, evaluate, and analyze it to determine if it is a risk worth taking or renewing. In order to do so, you will need to research and understand the client’s risk, whether personal or commercial in nature. You will develop appropriate contract wording and pricing. Finally, you will negotiate and market our product to your brokers in order to secure new business and retain existing business.
Ultimately, your analytical abilities and strong broker relationships will help Chubb grow profitably and reach out overall business targets.

COMMERCIAL INSURANCE OVERVIEW
Chubb Commercial Insurance is a division focussed on serving customers with between $10M and $750M in revenues in Canada, across all lines and market segments. This department underwrites and sells a broad range of products and segment specific solutions to a select group of companies that require specialized attention. These companies include those involved in the manufacture of high technology components and software, the life sciences sector, telecommunications, energy, and many more.
Within the Commercial division, there are specialized teams dedicated to different areas of focus, including Energy Underwriting (oil and gas, mining, hydroelectric), Life Sciences (Pharmaceutical and Medical Device), Technology and Clean Technology, and Entertainment Underwriting (film, television and concert production).
