This position is a key member of St. Michael's Foundation’s Communications team. The Writer will be responsible for writing the communications and collateral materials to promote the work of St. Michael’s Hospital to donors and the public and to tell St. Michael's story to donors, volunteers and the public.


  • Research and write a range of engaging donor-centric communications, including speaking notes, sales materials, impact reports, annual reports, and correspondence
  • Transform content across platforms to appeal to diverse audiences
  • Produce compelling digital copy for the website, videos, social media posts, enewsletters, email campaigns, and the digital donor wall
  • Liaise with Hospital physicians, researchers, scientists and executives, and conduct interviews on a variety of health-care issues
  • Liaise with donors and conduct interviews on why they give to St. Michael’s Hospital
  • Collaborate with the Events team to bring big ideas to life through strategic, custom communications plans
  • Distill complex medical information into clear, understandable language that appeals to a range of audiences
  • Ensure the views of stakeholders are addressed and approvals are met
  • Provide copy-editing and fact-checking support
  • Develop compelling story ideas and angles
  • Participate in all strategy meetings as required
  • Works as a team player promoting a positive and professional work environment and conducts role with integrity and respect
  • Acts as an ambassador throughout the community, positively representing the Hospital and the Foundation
  • Abides by the policies and procedures of St. Michael’s Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation
  • Abides by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and works in a manner that is safe, reporting incidents immediately to direct supervisor
  • Performs other duties as assigned in order to meet the overall goals and objectives of the Foundation
  • Operates within the culture and core values of the organization


  • University degree in Journalism, Public Relations or Communications preferred
  • A minimum of six years related experience
  • Strong and versatile writing skills and ability to convey a compelling story, especially as it relates to health care and medical research. Analytic ability required
  • A minimum of two years experience with digital and social communications
  • Excellent stakeholder relations skills, with a strong sense of diplomacy
  • Proven experience working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to write and edit quickly and concisely to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to accurately summarize and communicate complex information
  • Experience in independent researching, fact-checking and interviewing with hospital
  • Demonstrated reliability, flexibility and multitasking skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with standard office software
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to work cooperatively in a team environment

Note: Occasionally, Foundation staff are required to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends as a requirement of their job
