ESL Volunteer Trainer and Program Coordinator 

Have strong computer, social media and Zoom skills? Interested in improving your training, administration and coordination skills while helping newcomers and tutors? 

The Immigrant and Refugee Services Program (IRSP) aims to help newcomers to Canada with information and referral, orientation, solution focused counselling and interpretation. Moreover, we build bridges across communities to foster social inclusion, contribute to building the capacity of immigrants and refugees. Among many areas of support, volunteer tutors host small group ESL learning classes, from basic to advanced English lessons.  

Due to COVID-19, we are moving our classes online and are looking for a virtual volunteer to help us with this transition and coordinate learner and tutor connections. The role includes researching various accessible learning platforms, help match tutors and learners and training tutors and students to confidently host classes online. 

 Volunteer Duties: 

  • Research and training delivery of virtual learning platforms (Zoom, Google Classroom, Whatsapp, etc.) 

  • Check in with tutors and students to answer technical questions and ongoing support 

  • Match tutors and learners  

  • Host periodic get-togethers with tutors

Skills Required: 

  • Enjoy working with a diverse group of people and organizing activities 

  • Comfortable public speaking and taking on a leadership role 

  • Proficiency in virtual teleconference and online group platforms 

  • Some experience coordinating, scheduling or facilitating groups 

  • Some experience with administrative tasks 

  • Friendly, open, reliable, patient, non-judgmental and non-discriminating 

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills 

  • Must have cross-cultural sensitivity 

  • An interest ans some experience in ESL and adult learning 

  • Portuguese and/or Spanish an asset 

Orientation & Training: 

  • Orientation to West Neighbourhood House and the ESL Tutoring program will be provided 

  • On-going support provided by IRSP staff 

  • Training workshop opportunities provided throughout the year 

*This role requires a high degree of autonomy and self-direction, with supervision and ongoing support from ESL Tutoring coordinator 

Volunteer Commitment: 

  • Flexible time during weekdays, 4 hours/week 

  • Available some weekday evenings, between 6-8pm 

  • Minimum 3 months commitment
