Volunteer Storyboard Artist - Pet Cancer Fund

Sep 20, 2020
Vancouver, British Columbia

We Are:

The Pet Cancer Fund is a Vancouver-based organization whose mission is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer.

Estimates suggest the number of dogs and cats developing cancer every year is 12 million; roughly 6x the number of humans getting cancer yearly within North America.

More needs to be done and as we set out to build a large team of distributed, animal-loving passionate volunteers to help our furry friends, we need an experienced and talented storyboard artist for a very special project we’re working on. That’s where and how you can help us!

The position:

The Storyboard Artist is responsible for taking a written script concept and turning it into a visual story to support the production of videos that will be used as part of the Pet Cancer Fund’s media campaign to be broadcast across new and traditional media channels and posted on the organization’s media properties. The Storyboard Artist is responsible for establishing an animatic to depict the expected visual outcome and for providing clarity in the storyboards to convey a visual message.  The Storyboard Artist works as part of a collaborative team to share creative ideas and storyboard visuals to help pet owners share their stories and experiences of living with a pet diagnosed with cancer.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Study scripts to determine artistic interpretation and create story boards that will guide filming sessions by creating a visual representation of what should unfold in each shot/scene.

  • Create sequences that reflect the emotional, action, and/or comedic intent of a scene to ensure the desired messages are translated from the script to video.

  • Use staging, shot composition, screen direction, and cutting for effective storytelling and eliminate, edit or add scenes as needed until the final video is produced.

  • Work in close collaboration and effectively communicate creative ideas with script writers and videographers to recommend solutions to interpret the script visuals and help ensure footage is properly captured with limited retakes.

About You

You are a highly resourceful team-player who enjoys working in a creative capacity, but who can also work effectively independently. You exercise good judgement in a variety of situations and have a proven track record to flexibly respond to changes as a story evolves. The ideal individual will have strong communication, creativity, and organizational skills, and the ability to meet deadlines.

You have:

  • A degree or equivalent in animation, art and design, film-making, or other related studies;

  • Experience creating storyboards or in performing related work such as animation or illustration;

  • Basic knowledge of film/video production and of cameras, lenses and other equipment;

  • Composition and presentations skills;

  • Excellent drawing skills;

  • Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability;

  • Ability to interpret scripts written by others and translate to storyboards

  • Very strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills;

What we provide you with

This is an amazing role for anyone who is looking to build on their existing professional portfolio of work experience while supporting a volunteer-based organization.

  • Most of the work can be carried out virtually from anywhere in Canada or the United States. However, the position will require proximity to other members of the team to complete on-location aspects of the project in Vancouver.

  • This is a volunteer position and the time commitment is approximately 4-6 hours per week.

  • This project is deadline dependent & may require more hours at times, flexibility is a must.

  • This is a volunteer position that could potentially lead into other roles within the organization.
