Volunteer School Program Facilitators/Educators - Vancouver Avian Research Centre

At VARC, we believe education is the first step in safeguarding birds and bird habitat. We offer a variety of public outreach programs for adults and youth to raise awareness of environmental issues as they relate to birds. Our youth and school programs are a great way to engage children as lifelong ambassadors of wild bird populations. Our programs explore how birds are a vital part of a healthy planet, the issues they face and what can be done today to ensure their long-term survival. We are currently looking for responsible and reliable volunteers to facilitate these pre-set presentations. Aspects of both Remote work and work from home in particular designated region. We are currently looking to fill positions in the following regions:

Region #1 Abbotsford & Langley.     Region #2 Surrey & Delta    Region #3 Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows & Coquitlam

As this is strictly a volunteer role, there will be no monetary compensation however, VARC will provide all training & materials required.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF ROLE:

Current VARC volunteers will source all clients prior to your involvement. We will do all advertising, invoicing and initial organization with interested schools/teachers. Once a school/teacher has agreed upon a presentation date, final communications will be passed over to you, the successful candidate. Successful candidates will then be responsible for the following:

  • Liaising with Teacher in your assigned district, primarily via a VARC designated email and occasionally by telephone, to organize the final details of presentation day and time (such as where you can park or how early the teacher would like you to arrive prior to the presentation)

  • Update the final presentation day information in a Google shared calendar

  • Possibility of doing up to a maximum of 4 presentations in 1 day at the same school (max 2 presentations in the morning and max 2 presentations in the afternoon) as we offer schools the option of doing more than one classroom presentation a day. This may be either in person or online depending on pandemic precautions and regulations.

  • Responsible for own travel to and from school on presentation day or access to computer for online presentation

  • Keep materials that we provide for the presentation organized and in good condition at all times

  • Learn the approximately 1HR long presentation/program that we have created and execute in a fun, friendly and professional manner

  • Keep your availability updated regularly in a shared Google calendar to ensure there are no scheduling issues for our team when they arrange the initial booking for you.

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

Successful candidates should have the following skills and requirements:

  • Ability to provide a criminal background check as you will be working in schools with children

  • Experience with leadership and/or presentation and/or working with youth

  • Enjoy working with children of all age groups while still maintaining a professional manner representative of the Vancouver Avian Research Centre and what we stand for

  • Access to own vehicle and computer with internet access. No compensation given. This is a volunteer position.

  • Have an interest and passion for local birds and wildlife

  • Have experience and knowledge working with Google Calendars

  • High level communication and conversational skills

  • Be responsible, professional and extremely reliable.

  • Great organization

  • Ability to adapt
