The Pet Cancer Fund is a Vancouver-based organization whose vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. 

Estimates suggest the number of dogs and cats developing cancer every year is 12 million; roughly 6x the number of humans getting cancer yearly within North America. 

More needs to be done and as we set out to build a large team of distributed, animal-loving passionate volunteers to help our furry friends, we need Human Resources professionals to help in the administration of our organization.

About the Position

The volunteer Onboarding Specialist plays a key role in designing and executing the volunteer onboarding and offboarding programs for the Pet Cancer Fund to ensure these programs are effectively implemented for all new and departing volunteers. The Specialist carries out research to align PCF’s program with best practices and provides advice to managers as they onboard new volunteers. The Onboarding Specialist assesses and seeks to continuously improve the onboarding and offboarding programs, incorporating feedback received from various stakeholders, to support the evolving needs of the organization.


Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Research current best practices in volunteer onboarding, orientation and offboarding programs and identify manager and volunteer needs in this area to ensure the program design successfully meets the needs of the organization.

  • Support the Onboarding and Orientation Co-Lead on designing and developing the onboarding and offboarding programs, processes and tools that meets the unique needs of Pet Cancer Fund and that is flexible to evolve as the organization grows.

  • Provide coaching and guidance to managers throughout the onboarding process to explain the importance of the program and assist them with the establishment of new volunteer plans, goals and check-ins at pre-established intervals.

  • Consult with managers and new volunteers to gather feedback regarding onboarding and orientation programs to ensure the onboarding program is fully supporting the orientation of new volunteers to PCF and that it helps them become functional in their volunteer positions as soon as possible.

  • Identify key performance indicators and analyze associated metrics to assess the effectiveness of the programs and recommend enhancements when required.

  • Prepare reports based on surveys, metrics and other available data to share results regarding the onboarding and offboarding programs with various internal stakeholders. 

  • Support the team by carrying out exit interviews and facilitating virtual orientation sessions, when required.


About You

You are well-versed in the design of HR programs and have strong analytical skills to carry out needs analysis and research into best practices. You are an excellent communicator and enjoy working with various stakeholders to support them with their HR needs. You are collaborative in nature and strive to deliver integrated HR services in partnership with other HR professionals.  You have:

  • A degree or certificate in Human Resources Management or a related field with a minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role;

  • Experience developing HR programs and supporting processes and tools, particularly related to onboarding, orientation and offboarding;

  • Experience leading orientation sessions to integrate new volunteers to an organization would be considered an asset;

  • Experience analyzing program metrics and creating summary reports to share with various stakeholders;

  • Experience researching industry best practices in various HR domains;

  • A high standard of professionalism, including in matters of ethics and confidentiality;

  • Strong client-service orientation.
